  • NSW Mk1 Golf

    Hi Guys,

i am looking to buy a mk1, to be used as a daily, so it needs to be some-what reliable and have a strong motor. don't mind what sort of engine or whether its a 2 or 4 door (but everyone prefers a 2 door) if you could let me know, it would be much appreciated.
located around the Canberra area, so ACT or NSW cars would be preferred

    Cheers Finman

I don't know of any locally that are running and for sale. Gumtree might be your best bet unless you're willing to do some work on a non-runner. Nick out at Bungendore has a couple of 2 doors that are complete and have minimal rust, or he's got 50 rusty ones that need lots of work.

Whichever way you go keep us posted. There's a bunch of MK1/MK2 owners that meet every few months at Goons in Kambah and talk old Golfs all night, you're free to come along and join us.

We help each other out so if you need help or advice get in touch.

    Cheers

    Paul

PS. Still got the shell you bought off Garreth?

ok, thank you. yeah, will definitely think about coming along to chat. yeah still have the shell, just trying to find out a way to go about rebuilding the 1.8l 16v motor that's going in it and getting it back on the road. which is probably the worst feeling, looking at it with no motor and no real plans on where to go from here (in terms of engine) but more of a show car then a daily.

      cheers Aaron

What about a 20vt? Goon is putting one into his MK1 and Mick out at the airport has complete Audi S3 (AWD) running gear for sale - 150kw motor, 6 speed gbox, rear diff etc.

Nick will be selling parts off his MK2 soon I think. Very strong 8v in that car if you are interested and by coincidence it's getting the old motor from your MK1.

Is Ben's car any good to you?

unfortunately i'm a little stubborn and love the look and rawness of an earlier model engine like the 16v and would really like to stick with that. but the 20v's always an option.
i don't mind the 8v's, they are a good little motor, could always go in the daily if i find one.

not to be rude, but who is Ben sorry?

also could i get your expertise on this golf i found on gumtree?

            Me too. Here's mine.

Build thread from when I bought it is here.

Ben has a 16v MK1 he's selling. He said he was going to get in touch with you.

That MK1 on Gumtree is worth a look, has all the gear you want in a daily but you have to check for rust. Anything mechanical can be replaced but rust has to be cut out, new pieces welded in, prepped and painted. It's a long job and a lot of work. If that MK1 is pretty rust free it's definitely worth getting.

Ever thought of getting a MK2 GTI as a daily? I know one for sale that drives to Canberra from Braidwood and back every day.

            Cheers

            Paul

PS. Still looking for a 16v head for your KR? I might be able to help you there.

that is a sweet car, a lot of effort went into that one, i was even thinking of buying it. but no money At least it went to a good home.

oh yes, i remember Ben, how could i forget. the only problem is i am interested in just the motor.

yeah rang up about that Mk1, and he had just sold it (sucks)

unfortunately i'm not a fan of the shape of the Mk2's (no disrespect, they are great cars, just not my taste).

I did find one from camden gti, but it needs a bit of work and machining (what did you have in mind?)

              cheers

I've just bought a Seat Cupra with an ABF 2.0 16v. Bottom end needs work but the head was recently serviced. I'm thinking of selling it if I can get a good price otherwise I'll fix the engine and put it in the MK1. That head would go nice on a KR.

Ring me if you're interested. 0458 450 seven four two

Nick at Bungendore has a KR in a Passat that he's selling for $1500 (whole car). Might be another option.

                Cheers
