Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Upper and lower front brace - you should be able to make both for $20. Real easy to do and the lower one makes a big difference to the handling. Go to http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...d-84392-8.html and see my post on how to make them and what good they do.

Rear swaybar - you can do for less than $60 and a few hours welding the brackets onto the Golf. Biggest cost is getting a thick front bar off a Jap car that fits the Golf from the wreckers. On mine I used a bar from a Mazda Capella on one of my MK1's and a Sigma on another MK1 (it was a long, long time ago). Front sway bar isn't needed (even the aftermarket ones are quite thin), it's the rear one that does all the work.

      Cheers

      Paul

I don't have the knowledge or equipment or garage to do any welding, unfortunately.. I'd love to learn, but that'll have to wait for now.

Any chance someone on the forum lives in vic/nsw/sa and could whip a lower front brace together for a little extra cash their way?

        i.e. parts + labour...

          I just made a batch.

New steel, mig welded, sand blasted, powder coated and made on a jig to precisely 683mm between the bolt centres.

There's no tolerance for out of alignment chassis with these as I designed them to retain the VW factory dimensions and there's no clearance on the bolt holes, they're 10mm holes for 10mm bolts.

If your car is out of shape you'd need to fix the car or elongate the holes in the bar to suit.

          These clear 4speed, 020 and 02A/J boxes.

          Asking $100 a piece

And they make a big difference to the handling. With one of these you can turn into a tight corner and the car goes where it's pointed.

And no, I don't get a commission from Pete, I just love getting old Golfs to handle like they should - bloody good!

            Cheers

Can I see if it fits before purchase? I imagine this wouldn't take long to install at all.. I just don't have the tools or facilities to be doing any metal fab.

Someone else offered me an adjustable one for $120 but they haven't gotten back to me yet and I'm hoping to have something sorted by Friday (have a workshop for the day and going to be doing coilovers and other various work).

                Cheers mate!

I can modify it if it doesn't fit. Are you in in Melbourne?

A quick check is simply to measure between the centre of the bolts with a tape measure. It should be 683mm.

To find the centre of the bolts you can draw lines between opposite points of the bolt head. Where they intersect is the centre

If it's only out by a couple of mm the bar will pull it back into shape.

I'm leaving work in Mckinnon (melbourne of course) as we speak. I would love to pick it up/try it on/measure it up asap if you're free any time this afternoon or tomorrow.

                    thanks mate.

Wow Pete - they look incredible - Do you have any things you're making? I just bought an OEM K Bar from Dub Toffee so I don't need one of these, but definitely interested in any other powder coated OEM parts you have lying around/are planning on making. I.e. those dust shields - anything

It's not hard to get stuff powder coated, just takes a little organisation. I can get more stuff done but so can anybody, I'm not sure I'd be adding any value over just dropping the stuff off yourself.

A few friends wanted those lower braces so I made a jig to factory specs and made up a batch. We were cleaning up parts for the Passat and an ABF build anyway so they all got powder coated.

Maybe there's some value in offering a changeover service for MK1 parts?
