Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

To the OP, Definitely try the controller first. Mine shat itself leaving me in FWD and everybody under the sun from VW to vwvortex told me that the haldex unit itself was at fault. I had this dreaded fault come up on vagcom:

      1 Fault Found:
      01155 - Clutch
      04-10 - Mechanical Malfunction - Intermittent

From that everybody was convinced the whole rear haldex unit had bitten the dust. Cut a long story short i thought it wasnt the clutch packs as if i turned the car on from cold, and quickly gave it a bootfull on grass / dirt it sometimes had 4wd for a brief moment so they were still capable of transferring torque.

Anyway i ended up buying a complete rear diff/haldex assembly 2nd hand at a reasonable price (because the diff apparently has a shot bearing) from an Audi TT out of the UK just incase, swapped the haldex controller over first just to be sure and voila, 4wd working like a charm again Should've just bought a haldex blue controller dammit, with the prices i've seen them at it mightnt have been much more expensive!

Diff oil will quickly kill the haldex coupling! There are cases of haldex units having died from apparent fluid migration from the diff into the haldex unit. So whatever you do make sure you use the right oil, its not cheap but considering it dosn't really get changed that often its a bargin compared to a broken haldex!

As I mentioned in my much earlier post I had severe noises coming from the rear in my Bora. It was fine starting off cold but after say a one hour drive any forward motion while turning ie when the diff would be called into play because of the different rotation speeds of the rear wheels it would make a ugly noises. I had to take it to the dealer twice to get it diagnosed. I went to school with the service manager so I told him to take the car home so he could hear the noise.

They diagnosed it as the diff, not the Haldex. They changed the oil and i have not heard a peep from the diff since and that was around 50,000k's ago.

When I told my mate who is a very good mechanic/engineer he said that it was quite common with Commodores also. Change the diff oil and all is good.

just cost me small packet to replace my haldex unit. some bozo in the past used the wrong oil and it stuffed the clutch system. I had either 0% or 100% drive through the haldex, so tight corners were like a 4WD with diff lock on, lots of bouncing and poor steering. was cheaper to replace the haldex and diff with a 2nd hand unit than get a new haldex clutch pack from VW.
