It's the same as the 8L S3, I don't know about the latest S3. He has been old by a VW specialist it's toast. Can't remember who it was.

It would be unusual for that to happen unless it lost a lot of oil. The reason I asked is because my Bora was making bad noises from the rear after around 120,000k's and the Haldex was suspected. However it turned out to be the differential. VW don't have any recommended schedule for changing the diff oil. I had always had my Bora serviced at the dealer. A simple change of diff oil and all was good.

I just thought I would throw it out there for this case and other 4Mo owners.

That's good to hear. Maybe worth him trying the cheap options first. He sent me over the quote which I didn't read at the time..... They reckon the controller is duff at about $2K. It could be a warranty job from the non VW dealer, he was doing some research to try and save them money/time.

Probably worth doing the diff and Haldex oil first and seeing if his curious noise goes away. I scanned it the other week and there were no faults logged.

Should be a few cheap contollers lying around. Lots of people have upgraded their 4Mo's and R32's. I have an R32 controller sitting in my garage that I haven't gotten around to putting into my Bora. I am told it is different and slightly more aggressive than the Bora one but I have never heard of anyone who has actually done it to know whether it makes a worthwhile difference.

For what it's worth these can and do fail. I think it was Goodfella on here who had is die.
I've also heard that the R32 unit is slightly more aggressive than the standard Bora one (it does have a different part number). That said I don't know if the difference is noticeable or if there even is a difference.
                    Cheers,

Hi All .. thanks heaps for the help and esp Thanks to Gavin. It is nice to find a group that genuinely want to help .. cant say that for other on line clubs I am in.

What I would like to know is if it is worth having a high performance controller installed here and will it make a big difference to the performance of the car. I plan to tweek this little car so that it will perform better ... much like most people do with these cars. Other than this problem this Bora is in really nice condition and seems like it would be a fun project.

As always .. your input is much appreciated ..

                      Cheers ..Bruce

Trent was right, my haldex controller went south unexpectantly and I replaced with a oem before I go to a blue controller ....

with regards to the R32 v Bora they are the same ! I had this confirmed a while back... basically they are the same from gearbox back.

I have driven Manaz's Bora with blue controller and it makes a world of difference, hence why I am looking to upgrade very soon.

is there specific oil cited for haldex and diff? or can the diff oil be snuck into the haldex coupling?

The Haldex and the diff are 2 distinctly separate units. The Haldex has its own specific oil. The diff has oil typical to all modern diffs. Obviously it has to the correct oil. Both oils are completely different from each other.

Well .. as it turns out .. the dealer I bought this car from has now taken the car to VW to have to haldex oil changes and serviced. they have told me it seems to have fixed the problem. I am very skeptical about this since the noise was quite bad at one point.

There has been a suggestion in the thread that an oil change could solve this issue .. any other opinions ??

I get the car back tomorrow and will be testing it out very throughly ..

                              Cheers all ... Bruce
