Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Redline gearbox oil

Looking for 2-3 litres of Redline MTL or MT90 gearbox oil, delivery to Sydney or can collect if near CBD.

In the process of confirming which one I need and if 2 or 3 L is required.

I know people rave about the stuff, but I would hazzard a guess that just about any decent gearbox oil would make the world of difference if it's due for a change anyway...

What does red line offer over others?

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

        Good question.

I'm following what many other Polo owners are going for, can not speak from experience about what is better or worse than anything else...

Check out the redline site Aaron, but its has excellent frictional purposes, as far as im concerned its a toolbox in a bottle, cured MANY shift issues, good friction oil will aid the syncronisers. so much different to "normal" gear oil.
Ive used it since i started my apprenticeship , way back well makes me feel old to remember Anyway early Cupras with 02a were baulky boxes, MTL cured that. This is why i suggested it way back on here with the 02R box which is in the Polo with very similar internals. MT90 goes well in the 02M 6 speeders. i swear by it but its down to the individual.

As Jmac said, oils aren't all the same.

You should see the lengths that companies go to to make better oils for specific applications.. Redline, while it's as dear as poison, is one of the best engine oils on the planet. I can't give a definitive answer for gb oil though, as i've never used it (but i plan to VERY soon).

Pommie Steve Read runs Redline in his TF Dragster (as a number of others do) and he said "We did 15 passes on the main bearings. Pulled the main caps off, had a look and put them back on."

Talk to anyone (knowledgeable) in motorsport and they'll tell you that if you don't use the right lubricants, it'll cost you.

Wouldnt if it were just normal, cause baulking Vw boxes didnt just start to happen

Not that there was anything wrong with my gearbox but after the fresh oil went in the change was immediately noticeable with the RL fluid. Great stuff. Highly recommend it (insert plug here for Jimmy as well).

I can supply MTL or MT90 no worries, if interstate postage will apply, QLDers can pick it up from me for $32 per quart.
                        Cheers
