Group Buy / EOI new generation DNS head units (RNS-510 alternative)
Next week they are supposed to be rolling out the major update on the units leaving the factory but I'll try and get a better interim update in the meantime anyway.
Any tips for mailing mine back for replacement from the US? USPS states it is prohibited to mail this back to China through them. FedEx and UPS want over $140 to ship it back.

Have you been asked to send it directly to China? As hotbmwm3 suggested, you'd need to request an RMA directly with AS if that was the case, I would have thought it would make more sense to send it back to Sandy in Aus (USPS should be able to do that fairly cheaply, i've had 60lb boxes posted back for not too much $$$). Though if Sandy has cleared it with AS it should be fine, surely you'd be able to get cheaper shipping than fedex/ups/dhl etc. I've noted previously, but I had to RMA a Eonon unit back to China, cost me $30 with AusPost and took 11 business days, but your USPS might be a bit different?
You need Audiosources written permission to allow the return to minimize any problems.
Remember Sandy is not Audiosources.
If it were me, I would return the goods to Sandy in Australia because you have a contract under Australian law with Sandy.
Australian consumer laws give consumers that purchase faulty products from North America the same protections as if they lived in Australia even though they live "overseas".
If it were me, I would return the product to Sandy today because he offered a money back guarantee if the software update did not fix the bugs.
He says he didn't offer it but he must have forgotten
In addition, the product is not fit for purpose it can be returned for a refund, and in 99% of cases that are heard by a tribunal or a court, shipping costs are NOT paid by the consumer, they are paid by the seller of the faulty goods.
If the guys in North America that have purchased the units that are unhappy with them are unsure of how to force Sandy to pay for all shipping costs contact me by private message, I am happy to lodge the paperwork and attend the hearing as your agent in the small claims tribunal at no cost.
You would just pay the tribunal the application cost
Please note, the additional $9 fee to support your application is not required because Sandy is not a registered business or company (in legal language a company is a 'body corporate', he is what is called a 'sole trader' because he operates as a person.
If anyone wants to have their shipping costs refunded in full I'm happy to help out for free, just send me a private message.
I don't like to see people screwed out of money because the seller doesn't understand his moral or legal obligations. This is Australia not China, and Sandy doesn't understand our legal system as it relates to commercial law.
I'm not a lawyer, I just studied contract law as a part of an undergraduate business degree that thousands of people do every year. But I can assure you Sandy will be asked to pay for ALL the shipping costs if the units are found by a tribunal to not be 'fit for purpose'.
On a practical level, I have no idea why Sandy would go through the stress and taking a day off work from his paid employment to appear before a tribunal.
Man, calm down. There is no reason to start throwing around silly ideas like taking Sandy to court/small claims etc.... that is a very last resort, and would only end up costing everyone more pain and anguish.
FWIW I also did various law subjects as part of my business/economics/engineering degrees, doesn't make me anywhere near close to a lawyer, and they also didn't cover much, not enough to get an indepth understanding of commercial law.
Contact a lawyer.
It's like someone (im thinking stereotypical ditzy american blondes haha) taking first year psychology as part of their arts degree and instantly thinking that that makes them a psychologist....

Said that any radio device is on the list of prohibited items. Showed me the list and it was pretty extensive.

Well that's interesting. Just looked at the prohibited items list (on USPS, and Auspost), and it says "•Radio transmitter-receivers (objects used for secret communication)" -> pretty sure it's more about 2-ways, and not FM radios and the like.... sounds like someone is being too literal.
Strange, because how else do they send the many thousands of chinese headunits in and out of China?

When are the good units going to be done. This is getting ridiculous that every morning I have to deal with a white screen for my 40 min commute to loserville with no radio.
Shipped mine back to AS a couple of weeks ago through USPS. No issues... Might want to try another USPS location, you were lucky enough to get the person who has no common sense. Sandy has my replacement unit shipping out this week. Right Sandy... Haha.

That was what I was about to say, the USPS rep probably got alarm bells when you said it was a "car radio unit" or something similar. If you just say "car head unit" or "car dvd" or something like that, there shouldn't be a problem. Besides the unit relies on external power and has no battery - how they expect it to cause any issues is beyond me.
As for returning directly to AS, I only ask international buyers to do this since it will not save them any money shipping it to me instead. Of course you can insist on returning it to me, and my address is provided on my invoices, but it would be a rather pointless exercise.

The unit is available now, I am just waiting for the software to clear a few bugs. If you would like I can organise a replacement unit for you now. I was doing the same for robk5787 and we were going to wait till the big update to roll out this week but now I'm thinking for those that want it now I'll just ship the replacement out now (once you ship the return unit) and you can update to the new firmware yourself later.
Sorry if I am a little slow, but I have a 2009 Touareg RNS510 I would like to replace due to the various firmware issues etc. This group buy do the Touareg pre the 2010 update version?
"The above units suit Golf / Jetta V and up, Polo 6R, Scirocco, Eos, Passat B6 and up, Tiguan, Amarok and Caddy. It also suits Skoda Octavia, Superb, Yeti etc.".......Aplogies if I have missed the obvious........... Gus
