Group Buy / EOI new generation DNS head units (RNS-510 alternative)

Just throwing this out there but - Sandy - what is the possibility of splitting the buy. Those who want it now and are prepared to take the risk and those who want a more demonstrated product?

It may be worthwhile to do a vote, if there are enough people who want the unit now with its current bugs, I'd be happy to get a batch out for them first. It would be best to wait until I have the next software update and see how far they've come though - it may be that it would be ready to go by then anyway. If not, I'll get that vote going.

I've got a day time demo now with a bit of late afternoon sun shining on the screen, so you can see how it performs. This video also includes the BT functions which begin at about 5:40. I didn't demo the "seek" function, which searches the phonebook, because as I've mentioned there is currently a bug that makes the unit search only for lower case letters so it would miss my phonebook entries anyway. I also don't own any iDevices so I have to borrow an iPod / iPhone off someone to demo it. The iPhone features aren't much changed from ANS though - the changes will come when the full music library feature is implemented.

Please note the unit is still on the same software as the last video.

I haven't had the head unit in the 32 since July sometime as I thought I'd have a new head unit by now.

No rush though either way, still not fazed.

To be honest, I don't know how I'd vote when I have no idea what bugs exist. I'd love the unit ASAP but I have a fairly low tolerance for problems with certain functions (RVC or freezing for eg). I'm all for releasing an early batch to the brave few who want the unit yesterday as they'll help to uncover bugs. Either that or if you could spend a week or so documenting bugs then we can make a more informed vote.

In your demo @ 3:45 you mention the shuffle feature can select videos. Can this happen while driving as the video functions are normally disabled? I know my luck - it would happen right when I've got a cop standing at my window!

TBH I have not tested the video functions on the DNS series while driving. However as I noted in the demo video, skipping to videos while in shuffle mode will be fixed i.e. removed, it was just an oversight. Even if you got the unit early and it wasn't fixed by the time you install it, to be safe you can just put your video files on a different USB / SD, or keep videos in a separate folder and shuffle only the music folder.

I will wait for the next software update, and if it is still not polished enough I'll make a video of the bugs so people can decide on adopting the unit early.

When GPS is running there is no music interface, all controls work as per normal (skip tracks and pause with right knob, volume with left knob etc) but the GPS screen will stay on top. You can minimise it by pressing the NAV button if you need to access the background SD / radio etc interface, and you can bring it back by pressing NAV again.

The BT is unfortunately still A2DP as opposed to AVRCP, so it can only control the music but not display info.

Ok this will probably be an obvious answer to a silly question type thing but when you have an SD card in the GPS or other slot does the cover go back on flush or just kinda hang off like inthe video?

It's been a couple of weeks since we last heard anything about the Android mirroring. Can you please press Audiosources for a status update on that? Makes me nervous that we're close to shipping without having a clear plan of action with that key feature.

Great point. Sandy please push this with them. As you know this is a very important feature that was advertised and regardless of what is needed (additional external box) we need to know this is the first thing on their list to roll out ASAP.

Sandy you said this is the same software as the last video...I was just curious why they did not give you a new update...
After the first video you said in a couple days they will send you a updated firmware,but that was 10 days ago?
And does the functions on the steering wheel work with music,and when in the phone to accept calls,or make calls?
