Group Buy / EOI new generation DNS head units (RNS-510 alternative)
They began production today, but I'm not inclined to jump straight in. I will wait for newer software and get a new sample unit to test with myself first. If it's as they promised and the production unit has no issues, I would expect a mid-January delivery....
Another months wait.
Hopefully there is no one buying this as a Christmas present to themselves
It's just a matter of time guys. All of us want it to be sooner than later, but it will be eventually a 100% working machine.
By the way, I've been talking to AS directly and they told me those are the functions of the unit, some of you asked about it, filtered by Sandy.
The functions of DNS810 is that
1. it has a big memory, CPU1.2G/RAM512RAM,dual core, it can only used in VW series,
2.Support HD 1080P video,suppoort MPEG2,MPEG4,AAC,MKV,MOV,ASF,ASX,TS,M2P,ALV,AVI,WMA ,APE,WMAP6,VP8 format,
3.Fully compatible with OEM Can-bus standards inluding TP2.0,BAP,DDP
4.Support OEM Air-con display
5.Support car door status display
6.Can display on-board diagnostics without connecting OBD box
7.Support tyre pressure monitoring systems.
8.Support car information show.
Which is why I said play the waiting game. In ~3 or so months time, when it has full MFD support and is fully stable, it'll be a damn good value proposition. As it is right now (for me, it's fairly stable), it's missing some features and still has some bugs.
Retrofitting TPMS would be an interesting project though.
Are you on the latest firmware? It should have fixed the out of memory issue, or so I thought.
At this stage it looks like that the monsun.exe crash is linked to white screen - AFAIK all those who had that error have seen the white screen issue.
Sorry could you explain a bit more? Do you not have the Skoda RNS-510 fascia to go with it? Or are you after changing the interface to Skoda green? The former can be found online or at your dealer while the latter can be done by going to aux-in, long pressing the middle of the far left of the screen, and using the options that appear on screen to change boot and loading screens. Hard button colour is set in menu -> display -> key color.
It already has all of those quoted features. The initial batch seem to have some production issues which the final release batch is meant to have fixed. Please confirm which updates you saw go through. MCU is the last update, after you see the white MPU update screen and reboot the unit. After the unit has booted into radio (you would go through calibration of the screen first), then insert the firmware SD again into the GPS slot. You will get an automatic popup window asking to update MCU, which you need to confirm, then it will say updating, and turn off the unit in a minute or two. If you did not get to this point you did not update the MCU. If you did, well your MCU should be updated...
Yea, I haven't had any memory/WinCE crashes and I haven't had the white screen issues either.
When you say production issues, you're talking about the whole bench flashing and white screen things, yea? If we've got working early batch units (touchwood) there should be no reason to need to swap them out for mass produced units, hey?
It's been pretty hot here (for NSW, anyways, ~35c ish in the sun) and haven't had any heat related issues.
Any news on the next firmware version?

I got the color changing going first time running. When I drove the car ten mins later no lights were working at all. I tried to change it again and restart car and it didn't work still.
My pic was in reference to the fascia sorry. Ok so I'm not loosing my mind. Does the fascia replace the entire front or just fill in my gaps?
I also have no real instructions of what cable goes where included. The booklet provided doesn't show you much. I don't even know where to put the white antenna plug.
Can anyone remember which post/page has some instructions?
Also, not sure how to make the nav work. It trys to get me to locate the GPS files and I'm not sure which igo folder to use

Unit lights are triggered by the headlights. They have to be on.
Fascia covers the gaps, google image what the rns510 in either a golf or skoda looks like and you'll see.
It's pretty self explanatory, but yea, the book is useless. GPS attaches to the threaded port, fit the antenna where appropriate. The top of the unit has a pinout for the iPod/whatever. Radio antenna fits in the only one it would fit in. CAN harness fits in the only one it would fit in.
GPS file is in iGo -> Scroll to bottom using your finger swipe, it's the only .exe file.

Hi Sandy,
I've updated to the latest firmware and when using the sd playback I have experienced the monsun.exe issue three times now. Have to turn the unit off then back on and it starts working again. However I haven't experienced the white screen yet.
The unit seems to emit some heat once driving for about 30 mins as warm air starts coming through my middle vents. Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?
Was about 24f yesterday morning. Took 30mins for the white screen to go away and be able to use my radio. On the latest firmware and all that. On the other hand, I have NOT had any monson errors since the update, no more can-bus issues where the whole radio starts chugging to a halt.
So other than the white screen, the unit seems to be working pretty damn well.

Yup, -10 celcius up here in the Great White North (lol) and the damn white screen is a 15 minute adventure each way to work and home!!!!
Other than that, I have had no other issues with memory (I don't use SD card music) or other errors. I do not think the white screen due to cold and the memory errors are linked....maybe same final issue (white screen) but not related. Other than that, unit is running consistently very fast and very well.

Yep, I have the firmware updates to the latest and "greatest":
As someone else mentioned, I also do not think that the white screen is linked to the memory issues. The white screen only pops up for me when it's very cold out. The monsun.exe memory issue happens only when GPS and the SD card are being used at the same time. I can petty much replicate the memory issue on demand, while the white screen only occurs during cold weather startups.

I DO use SD card music, almost exclusively. Still no errors after driving around for awhile this morning (another 20 min wait to get rid of the white screen....)

To me, the issue isn't with the screen itself, bit perhaps almost with a processor, perhaps the video processor, as the system reacts to various things, ill turn the system off to get rid of the glaring white screen, just to have it turn back on when I put the car into reverse.

Excellent point. Mine is the same way. However the reverse camera white screen is much more colorful and ONLY happens if the turn on white screen happened then cleared with soft reset. Sandy something to make note of.
The latest firmware definitely hasn't fixed the memory issue. I still cannot use the SD playback and nav at the same time without severe stuttering or a complete melt down. During just SD playback (nothing else on) I have had several monsun.exe errors and it is tking an increasingly long time to load it every time you switch it to SD mode. Hopefully the coming update provides some fixes as I believe the SD module has some serious flaws at the moment. I can use the nav with any other mode with no issues at all although I can't test aux or usb till Sandy sends me the cables.
I have a couple of DNS810 units on order for my Mk6 Golf and my 2011 Caddy Maxi van. In my Caddy, I am replacing a stock RCD210 which does not have multifunction steeling wheel button functionality.
Assuming I have the correct steering wheel with blank panels for the multifunction buttons, does anyone know would I be able to fit steering wheel buttons and have them work with the DNS unit?
What would I need to do or have for the Multifunction display (between speedo & tacho) to provide the same comprehensive trip info as the Golf and also info from the DNS unit. Currently the MFD only provides very basic trip info.

Thanks moda.
What's happening with the dns lighting is that it only comes on when I switch the lights on manually. I leave my lights on auto 100% of the time, and the dns does not realize they are on. So I have to flick them off and on again.
I went to skoda for the fascia and the one they had was the wrong shape for my climate section. He could order a few different types in but it would take three weeks and weren't guaranteed to fit- no clear picture... Nothing about the gap filler inserts. Do you have part numbers for these inserts?
In igo I'm looking for a way to silence spoken directions, while spoken alerts still exsist. i.e. turn left @ xxx is silent, but speed camera @ next intersection is spoken. Couldn't find this option.
Pretty happy with the seeking through large mp3s speed now, it skips straight to it (even if you skipped 1.5 hours in from the start) and the screen is pretty response. Works well. There still is the bug about not remembering/resuming on shutdown/startup, though. It just starts from the start of the track (bit annoying for a 2 hour set).

Have a search around, theres some threads talking about updating a non MF steering wheel to MF. You need to get a new steering wheel and the modules to read them, I think it's a bit of a mission, from memory.
On the MFD side, there's not much else that the DNS displays, so far. As discussed previously, eventually it should get updated to display nav and 3 line info for music etc.

No clue what's going on with the lighting, maybe try doing a reset.
No clue about the skoda thing, like I said, google golf rns510 and have a look, I imagine it should be similar or the same?
In iGo, go to options -> Sounds and notifications, and have a look in there, there are all sorts of options for spoken alerts/directions etc etc, it's just a matter of having a play around and tweak it to how you want it.
