I found this interesting conversion on a Passat I wrecked.
It's really well made and uses the stock Passat handbrake cable.
It will bolt up to a MK1 Golf but you'll have to figure out some brackets to hold the handbrake cables. The MK1 cables should work OK.
The callipers appear to be Mitsubishi Scorpion. Brake pads are DB252.
There were no proportioning valves in the system and it stopped OK with out locking the rears although I never really stomped on the brakes.
The adaptor brackets are nicely made and someone has gone to the trouble of electroplating them, very professional.
The hubs are unusual, the discs are bolted to the rear of them. I suspect the discs are MK1 front discs but haven't measured them.
Complete with axles, adapters, bolts, hubs, discs, bearings, callipers, hoses, pads, Passat handbrake cable and even a set of wheel nuts. Should be all the bits needed for the conversion.
They fitted OK inside MK3 steel 14" wheels. They won't fit inside 13" wheels.
$100 pickup only from Boronia Vic.
