  • SOLD Black 1.8 GTI for sale

    Hi,

Sadly, it's time that the GTI and I parted company.
It's been a great car, and it still is.
I could easily keep running in supersprints - it runs all day with both me and my son driving, and doesn't miss a beat.

Thing is that it is at the stage where it really needs someone with more time than I have to
    restore it properly.

The car is a 1984 1.8 GTI, privately imported into Australia from the UK in 1995.
Being a UK car, the speedo is in miles - it's got about 122k on it at the moment.

Being a '84 GTI, it could be a campaign, but I'm not claiming it is (the guy I bought it off claimed it was).
It has some of the features, but it's a bit inconclusive. The chassis number might be a touch early.
The campaign was never an official model though, so I'm not sure that there is any real consensus anyway...

I believe that the engine is standard - certainly I've never touched it. The power is in the mid-range, so I don't think anyone has changed the cam.
It's 1.8 mechanical K-Jet fuel injected, like the early BMWs. I've never had to touch the fuel injection either - it's always worked fine.
Goes just as hard now as when I bought it. Doesn't use use/burn/drip oil.
It can hold an early MX-5 NA down the straight at Wakefield Park.

Gearbox is a five-speed. Never touched that either - never needed to.
The only thing I've done is to fit spherical linkages for better feel. They are also adjustable too, which helps when lining up the planes...

The clutch is fairly 'sharp' on the take up, so I'm guessing that someone has fitted a sports clutch at some point. Still works fine though.

I have changed the brakes. I've put a TSR big brake kit on the front. This uses the original callipers, but use custom 270mm Black Diamond disks. The callipers are moved outwards using adapter plates. The disks are therefore offset a bit further in, which meant losing the dust shields...
The rear brakes are MkII Golf disks, off Static's old green car actually. I haven't done anything to change the brake bias, but it doesn't seem taily under hard braking (it does have the GTI height-sensitive pressure limiting valve).
The brakes work, trust me. I go through the kink at the end of the straight at Wakefield Park absolutely flat, braking halfway to turn 2. No brake fade all day with both of us driving it.
The front pad a Pagid fast road pads. The backs are stock golf pads I think.

The car has a full competition Bilstein rally suspension under it - custom built for the car by Heasmans (almost $3K there...) From memory (don't quote me) the springs (Eibach) are 270/150 I think - reasonably stiff.
The car certainly handles ok around Wakefield.

I'm including the second set of white wheels, with some well-worn Dunlop R spec tyres on them.
You might be another one or two track days out of them, but they're well used.

Exhaust system is 1 3/4 inch - still uses standard GTI headers.

The car has a 'Z' struct brace under the front. Never got around to putting a top strut brace on it.
Helps the car turn in nicely.

The interior is still pretty standard. It's in reasonable shape considering the car's age, but you would need to plan to strip it out, and re-do it I think.
I would also suggest replacing the instrument cluster with a metric one from Germany. There are some electrical gremlin - instrument lights are on the blink, and the tacho dies when you turn the head lights on...

The car does have a reasonably good Pioneer stereo.

I'll leave the four-point racing harness in the car - it's easily removed if you don't want it.

    Ok, some photos.

These were taken at Oran Park in December 2009 - one of the last track days there.

The car is capable of low 1:18's around Wakefield Park - that what my son does.
(I'm a bit slower...) That's in the middle of a whole bunch of MX-5's I run around with...

The road wheels are Enkei alloys (14's) with plenty of rubber left on them.
These is is an old photo, but this is what they look like:

I honestly don't know what the car is worth.
1800 GTI's are pretty rare in Oz. There are some 1600's, but I've not seen many 1800's.

I'll start at $3500 and see how it goes.

The important thing is that the car goes to someone who values it...

    Thanks,

    Ian.

        Thanks for the replies guys.

I posted a couple more video in the motorsport section.
Not great quality, but they sort of captured the moment.

The GTI has done 6 years of this sort of thing, and I've never touched the engine.
        Bomb-proof these things!

It's been suggested that $3500 is a bit on the low side, but that's what I said so.
What's more important to me is what you plan to do with it...

        Ian.

It would be a shame if you sold it for $3500, you should get what the car is truly worth mate. If you have a look at past ads/sales on here then you should get an accurate figure (and you might get a good surprise).

In any case, good luck with the sale.

                    Hi Guys,

I must apologise for not getting back to some of you.
I realised that I was doing something wrong, and the replies that I thought I had been sending weren't going through.
I must be working too hard (or going senile...).

It's been pointed out that $3,500 is a bit on the low side. Maybe, but having said that, I won't take it back. Maybe I'll sell the race wheels separately though... I didn't pay that much more for it 6 years ago, but maybe I got a bargain too...
I have had 6 years of fun with it, without spending a lot on it, so that's ok.

What I will do is take an interest in what you plan to do with the GTI. I guess the 'right' answer is fairly obvious...

Anyway, I'll get back to you, promise...

                    Ian.

Actually, that was partly my fault. I messed up the replies to the PMs send to me.
                        There are certainly enough interest.

Anyway, the car has now been sold - to someone that (I hope) is very happy

Feels a bit like selling a member of the family really. It was a tough think to do.
Certainly my son didn't want me to do it...

The thing is that someone else really deserved to get the car - someone with a lot more time and energy to look after it.
The car was basically very straight and solid - not even any dents or rust. I couldn't bear the thought of seeing the car deteriorate because I didn't have the drive to work on it. It's better that it's gone to someone I hope does have that drive and enthusiasm.

One of my work colleagues got me into the MX-5 club in Sydney. I've been in other others over the years, but these seemed like a good bunch.

Anyway, try as I might, I couldn't catch those pesky MX-5's. The GTI put up a good show mind you, and certainly frightened a few of them! It was pretty obvious though that if I was driving an MX-5 as hard as I was the GTI, it would probably be quicker.

The last time I took the GTI to Wakefield Park, it failed scrutineering - they didn't like that fact that the seat runners are slightly loose in the guides. Silly really - it'd been fine the previous times...

Anyway, my work colleague kindly offered to let me co-drive his MX-5.
This was a Japanese spec RS NB8A (imported from Japan) - 7,500 rpm readline and all.

This was one of my outings:

                        https://[url=http://youtu.be/NCPL7OV...[/url]

At time of writing, the video is still uploading (it's hi-res).

I was still getting used to the gearbox, so missed a gear of two in the middle, which is why the red MX-5 got away from me a bit.
The car's owner had butterflys when I finally passed that red MX-5 into the kink at the end of the straight!

Anyway, I had a ball, and managed to beat my best time in the GTI by the end of the day. I was hooked!
So, I figured if I couldn't best them, I'd join them.

                        I'm currently shopping for a race MX-5 - probably an NB8B.
It'll get big brakes, race suspension, R spec tyres, good exhaust, welded diff for starters, the we'll see how it goes!

BTW, I've still got the white rims with the (fairly) tired Dunlop DZ03 R spec tyres on them if anyone is interested...

                        Ian.

Congratulation to Ian and the new buyer
I have been thinking of buying this with the risk of devoice if I bring another Mk1 home LOL ...
I saw this car on market 6 years ago when I wasn't so in love with VW, good to see it still in good shape.
The new and lucky owner should be very happy.

Congratulations Ian, it really took every fibre of my being not to follow up on this. Like RedMk2Gti, I had to take into account a possible divorce if I bought it I'm glad it is sold so I am no longer tempted. A friend of a friend has one of the turbo mx5's and I with a little work I think he is down to 1:11's at wakefield now. Are your track wheels 14" or 15"? All the best,

                              Arno
