  • First official drawing of VW's new pickup...the Taro

See that drawing in the right corner of the pic? That's an official VW render of the company's new pickup, internally called the Robust. It's hanging at an event called ExpoAgro in Argentina, where the truck will be built. The banner on the left says "The VW pickup for the field." VW isn't playing around with the model, either, having invested a billion pesos into its Pacheco factory to get ready for the vehicle's 2009 or 2010 launch.

The render presents a neat profile that looks low to the ground -- more ute than pickup really, much like the VW Rabbit pickup from almost three decades ago. We do find the rear sloping roof a bit odd, seeing that it would eat into quite a bit of bed space if the line continued into the bed. But it's just a render, so we don't want to read too much into it. With carmakers putting fake interiors in test mules nowadays, for all we know, the Robust render could also be a hat, or a brooch, or a pterodactyl.

I dont know about low to the ground, you'd think it would be more high-ride if that;s how and where they're targetting it.

Could be an interesting niche vehicle to sell in AUS - but i'm guessing there'll be no RHD?

the line you see slopping down behind the cabin would be the roll bar.
remeber its only a outline drawing so rideheight would be to make the car look sexy hence seeming a abit low.

LOL!!! what a cack, a 5 yr old could have drawn that! thats the most basic shape of a ute ive ever seen. no doubt there'll be bagillions of inaccurate artists impressions drawn from that one little sketch.

Its not a niche vehicle this is a workhorse such as the Hilux, Triton & Ranger etc.

It is coming to Australia once prduction starts in South Africa which will probably be months after German production.

Nah like a Hilux sized Ute

A Rabbit/Caddy sized ute is in development for the South American market loosely based on the current Polo platform.
