GM targeting Golf GTI

Hey guys, i just came accross this article. Thought it might be of some interest. Looks somewhat a Renault with a Opel bagde.

What do you think, will this pose any threat to the GTI, I personally think not.

it looks like a scirocco lol - whats with the "can't beat em, join em" designs these days?

The 200 kW VXR is threatening the R if anything, not the GTI. Looks much better than the conservative Golf IMHO, but then a bar of soap could have some chances there as well from certain angles
Depends on the price I guess. If it undercuts both the R and the RS250 and IF corners and handles better than its predecessors, then Opel could sell it in significant numbers. Not enough to threaten the GTI, miracles won't happen over night and with one successful model only. Wonder if it will arrive here and under what badge. I'd hate to see it branded HSV though.

According to the article it will arrive in Aus in 2012 under the Opel badge.

And with the power output i also think they should have targeted the R not the GTI. But then agen that aint the first time this has happened.

I think it's a competitor for a 3 door golf R or rocco or may be ford focus RS!

That's right, should only be considered a competitor of other 3 door coupes/hatches and not of family 5 door hatches such as Golf R and GTI. That is Scirocco, Megane RS 250 and that's about it on our market since Focus RS is no more.

What do you mean by focas rs is no more???

Well, is not being manuafactured any more. i don't think there are more than a handfull new oned in dealerships here. In Europe they've been all sold out, including the special edition RS500.

Those who say that Vauxhalls don't handle, have they driven one or have taken Clarkson's view as gospel?

This one should handle very well with the e-LSD and similar suspension setup to the rs250 and focus rs to reduce torque steer & understeer.

I owned a Vectra JSII v6, with euro spec suspension and expensive Michelin tyres,in the dry it understeered, in wet weather it had terminal understeer, almost as much as a HQ Holden. The AH Astra, company car I had, understeered less, but the primary handling characteristic was tyre scrubbing understeer, it only was an underpowered 1.8l auto. As for the VRX ones yes I am relying on Top Gear and Fifth Gear comments.

That's like saying the GTI or R won't handle because the 2000 Passat and 2.0l Golf Mk5 doesn't handle very well.

This new VXR should perform (and handle) well.
