thaught they would have put a bigger diesel in it. as it stands its underpowered. bit of a dissapointment , i would have liked one of these .
harden up and do a DPF delete on it!!! 170kw is NOT underpowered by any standards!

So how much power and torque stock we're talking about? I'm at work and can't access the article... I doubt is 170 kW though, most likely 170 HP. Hope I'm wrong though.
The Golf GTD is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel. At 125kW it has 30kW less than the GTI but boasts an extra 70Nm of torque (350Nm).
Volkswagen’s GTD would follow diesel hot-hatches from Renault (Sport Megane dCi 175) and sister company Skoda (RS TDI).
The GTD is 1.2 seconds slower (8.1sec) in the 0-100km/h acceleration run, though offers a significant fuel economy advantage – 5.3 litres per 100km v 7.6L/100km (GTI DSG). Emissions are 139 grams (CO2) per km v 178g/km.
As with the GTI, the GTD is available with a choice of manual or dual-clutch auto gearboxes – both with six ratios.
Volkswagen says the GTD is “aimed at diesel drivers who value maximum dynamics”. In Europe it’s priced slightly below the GTI that starts at $38,990 in Australia for a three-door manual version.

No big deal then... I'd like to see a Golf with something like the 123d engine, meaning 150 kW and 400 Nm 125 kW and 350 Nm is just not enough for a Diesel hottish hatch today, especially when my daily driver has quite a bit more than that already...
first, with a tune, it bumps it up to 140~~kw and however many nm of torque.
but then, you can buy a pipe that bypasses the diesel particulate filter (which is hugely restrictive apparently), and then get the car re-tuned, and put out something in the area of 160~~kw and 460~~nm of torque.
so, with a dpf delete AND remap for dpf delete, you'd be a happy tractor driver.

Bigger engine would have added even more weight, which would potentially upset the dynamics.
125kW is hardly weak (and peak power isn't that important except for top end speed anyway) and it has more torque than the GTI, which will have a greater impact on 90% of driving you're likely to do on public roads.
Remove DPF as has already been stated, chip it, I'm sure it'd be quite a weapon...

IIRC the hi-po version of the Mercedes 2.1l turbo diesel isn't too shabby either (150Kw and 500Nm ! ).
ATM the best VAG can do in a production diesel is the 2.0l 4 cyl bi-turbo CR TDI in the Transporter van - 132Kw and 400Nm (but the word is it doesn't "feel" quite as powerful as the old 2.5l 5cyl PD TDI engine which had 128Kw and 400Nm). I can't see any reason why they couldn't fit this new engine into a Golf if they felt like it.
