But the mood for Turbo is definitely in full swing. Euro V and Euro VI are very hard to achieve with NA engines. Turbo onto R32 gives insane power and torque.....
Jeez, an R36 powered golf would fly.
Just imagine forced induction on that sucker!

345mm brakes up front. This is quite the package!

And 310mm rears - that's larger than the Mk4 GTI got up front!

I believe the 3.2L engine in the R32 was different to the 3.2L in the Passat in more ways than just port/direct injection, and it's certainly different to the 3.6L in the R36 (which has direct injection as you noted).

The reason given by VW themselves for dropping the R32 was that the cost of upgrading the 3.2L V6 to meet upcoming emissions standards. There's plenty of comment about it online - here's a few:

I wonder if the 3.6 will be in the same boat? - One imagines that it would be fairly simple to reduce the capacity of the 3.6 down to 3.2 and replace the "dirty" 3.2 unit. GMH has just built 2 DI engines, one 3.0 and one 3.6 so it's do-able.

Still, I'd feel safer betting that the NA engines will all get the boot in order to meet Euro VI, than betting they will be retained.

VW is leading the charge to all turbo/twincharged engines, has led the charge to twin clutch transmissions.

Ford has seen the light, and are talking about 2cyl, 3cyl, 4cyl, 5cyl, v6cyl, all turboed......the 5cyl is already in use but makes poor numbers in the Focus we get here.

GM has seen the light with DI - turbo will not be far behind when they realise Euro VI WILL affect them too.

With this R package, I would have loved to see the 5cyl turbo engine in it - Audi must have said no way

Toyota is betting on hybrid only - no turbo for them.

my guess VAG only let this build pass due to the fact that Audi will still have the king of hot hatches with the 2.5 V5. can't wait to see what the RS3 is going to look like and punch out...
