Yep MkII GTI for the win.
I still kick myself now for not buying an '89 UK imported 16V from Adelaide whilst I was at uni. Granted I couldn't really afford it then and wouldn't have been able to afford the .:R now and it didn't have air-con or power steering but still!
Apparently the car was rear ended and written off. Oh well.
