Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Boost and AFR gauge like no other

    For the tinkerer only.

Boost and AFR gauges integrated into the tacho of your car.

Contains some detailed step by step instructions on how to separate your instruments, replace stepper motors, and put it all back together.

I quite like this idea, but i've been wondering if anyone has hacked the trip computer. Surely an electrical engineer would be able to add an extra selectable option to the trip computer. That would be the ultimate boost display for me...

Alas, i'll probably just buy a vent gauge soon.

I've got the vent gauge which works really well, although it does limit the airflow through that vent (still get some).

The only problem with the trip computer is that the eeprom (assuming it's an eeprom of course) would have to be reprogrammed. You could potentially run it off a map sensor somewhere and bring it back to a custom box to decode the signal, but the MFD eprom would still need to know how to display that information signal, and therein lies the hard part.

a digital boost gauge would be hard to read cos the number would be constantly changing. I reckon your typical dial is much easier to read

Yep, I reckon that's why digital speedos never took off, but LED odometers are fine. Stepper motor dial with ability to turn on a peak hold function when required is good.

I think these LED gauges would end up giving me the irrits too, since they will always be dancing around like mad, just like watching the immediate fuel consumption digi readout. Then to get rid of them you need a new tacho face.
