Real roads have corners, AWD is the only way to get that much power to the ground reliably while turning.
AWD is actually worse (then RWD) when it comes to very high performance vehicles on paved surfaces.
Also, up to a certain point, Front Engine FWD is better then Front Engine AWD. Similar grip levels with less driveline losses.2008 Volkswagen Polo 1.9 TDI

We are comparing two Golf's here my friend, not random hatches vs sedans!
your comparisons are about as useful as comparing a FWD Honda City Turbo II to a 911 Turbo AWD.....well, they are both turbo

However you've hit the nail on the head without me having to go into it any further - suspension.
More important then drive type is suspension & chassis.
Here's an EVO 7 losing to a Megane R26R. You're going to try and tell me Evo's are crap too, right?
I'm replying to a blanket statement that FWD is worse then AWD. It's not true.2008 Volkswagen Polo 1.9 TDI

You're comparing cars that are completely different and who knows what they've had done to them.
I was just saying, AWD will always get better traction than a FWD, in some cases it is too much traction and it slows them.FOR SALE

That R26 is something else, I'm seriously considering getting a used 225 of some kind as a next car...
The new WRX is a questionable car to say the least, why it performs in such a way I'm still unsure of, what I am sure of is they're trying to break into the euro hot-hatch and premium hatch market, and aren't doing all that well at it80,000km 1997 MK3 VR6 manual for sale - www.vwwatercooled.org.au/forums/f23/80-000km-1997-manual-vr6-nsw-sydney-67658.html

I don't know of an FWD vs AWD with the exact same specs to compare off the top of my head, the closest is Golf GTI vs R32 which share chassis and suspension geometry, but the significantly more powerful R32 always wins because of the extra power. I'd bet money that if you got another 147kW GTI and added to it the R32's AWD setup (adding easily 100kg to the weight of the car), it would be slower then the FWD model.2008 Volkswagen Polo 1.9 TDI
