I think If it was that common there would be class action due to faulty manufacturing or at least a forced recall. Talked about alot and common arent the same thing. It is dangerous to be in traffic cruising along and have your engine fail or worse. It could easily cause a crash. Even the guys at P&P said it was highly unusual for a turbo to go on such a low km car. Shrug i am no expert so ill go with wild bad luck and poor original design by VW of their oil feed pipe system.

I imagine that the car will be exactly the same and my wallet much lighter when i get it back. But I am looking forward to getting it back. Its not much of a car but i am getting to love it.
Mine also failed at about 90K - same engine 1.9tdi, and also about 1 month after i bought it! I think I paid 3k for the replacement, so yours is a good price. We suspected the previous owner didn't use the VW approved oil, and that might have caused it but who knows really.

Might be worth checking that they clean the egr while they have it all apart.

They are just doing what any good mechanic does and employing ass-covering manoeuvres. If he told you it would be no more than 2k and then found that parts of the turbo had somehow made it's way into the motor itself, then you would be on here complaining even more that he lied about the quote.

As others have said, the 1.9tdi turbos were prone to failure dependant upon manufacture. If all they carried out was a service then it sounds as if it is just bad luck.
