Any body use Volks Home, Thomastown (Melbourne)

G'day,

I've owned my 98 caravelle for 9 month now and have been looking for a reputable VW specialist for future work.

I used Volkstech for my major service and I just wasn't impressed, prices were not the cheapest but I never choose the cheapest garage. Anyway, I know I would not use them again for a few reasons.

I now need a Cambelt change as there is no history to when it was done last! I hit the yellow pages and emailed off for quotes from most VW Specialists within 50Km (I'm in Macleod)

Volks Home gave me the best vibe and after speaking to John on the phone today I'm booked in for a timing belt/pump/pulley change, ATF/filter/gasket change and a leaky heater tap repair. He works on all VW and I get a good feeling from him.

What I can't understand is why there are no reviews or recommendations for Volks Home, has anybody got any experience of them?

Good to know, John seems good, handed the car over to him today. Going for transmission service and leaky heater tap replacement at the same time. Should feel like a new car when I get it back

I have dealt with John for probably the last 10 years. Have always found him and his mechanics to be great to deal with. He has always been open about the work required and done and will answer anything I have asked. He has always been cheaper than VW in all aspects and I trust the workmanship over VW. Highly recommend him.

Got the van today and I'm 99% happy. It sounds so much quieter, runs a hell of a lot smother meaning the work was long overdue. The auto gearbox used to judder a little at cruising 40-60 kmh speeds but that seems to have gone too, proof that a transmission service is worthwhile on these so called lifetime fluid transmissions.

To his credit, he had a newer model of the heater tap in stock than what was on mine already and instead of fitting it and making adapters/mods to make it fit/work, he's ordered the correct version from Sydney and says he'll bob it on whilst I wait sometime through the week.

My only concern is a high pitched whine which increases with RPM increase, it will be something minor like the tension or even the casing rubbing a little but it's definitely noticeable.

I haven't had chance to speak to him about it yet but I will see if it settles over the next few days and I'll chat to him when I get the tap fitted.

I do believe I've found my new mechanic

Booked in an appointment for Friday for my 06 Jetta TFSI for 90k service + timing belt change. Prices seem very reasonable and he sounds very honest. Hopefully I have found my new volkswagen mechanic!

Is it unsafe to give your car into a random mechanic? Someone who doesn't specialise in VWs? I found this place in blackburn called promax auto and their prices are half of vw specialists but Im skeptical about these places.
