Firstly this is unbiased fact.....Moderators feel free to remove this if you think we'll get sued...

My mk2 golf requires front wheel bearings.

First I rang Volkspower, got a quote of $600.....

Second I rang Volksaffair, got a quote of $360....

Thirdly I rang South Yarra VW 'service department' they took my name and number 3 days ago and haven't called back

Finally I rang Volkwerke and will be having my front wheel bearings done for $300.

I do most of the stuff myself but don't you need a special grease packing tool for front wheel bearings?

$600!. That's daylight robbery. No offence to anyone. Just alittle steep.

I don't reckon a VW dealer would even charge that.

$300 right on the money if everything goes to plan.

It take's me roughly three hour's to do this job & that incl's. making an hour round trip into town to use a press. That's just taking my time too & not rushing it.
So, two hour's labour + part's & the last set of bearing's cost me just under $100 (trade) from Rob Hamilton bearing.

Easiest way to do this job is to remove the whole strut.
Undo the tie-rod end, lower ball joint(this can be tricky to break the ball joint seat), drive shaft nut & top strut.
This way, youdon't need a wheel alignment.

Then you need to find & use a good hydraulic press.
Remove/press out the driveshaft hub, remove the circlip's & press out the old bearing.
Sometimes the inner bearing race can come out with the driveshaft hub & can be a pain to remove from the hub!

Press in the new bearing into the original postion, refit the circlip's & press in the driveshaft hub & then re-install the strut.

If you do it yourself, got a hydraulic press at work you can come in to use on a weekend.

Just saw the date on the post, I'm prob a bit to late

Dean is a great bloke though ! Be aware, Volksaffair did some work for me and did not use OEM parts.

My mum used to take her 67(I think) beetle there before she sold it and now my "new"cordy is going to get its service and roadworthy there Wednesday.

It helps I live literally 2 min walk from the factory, oh the convience and savings!

Yeah I've been all over, even got charged close to $1000 just for changing my cambelt once. So glad to find a place with good value.
