  • SA - good VW mechanic inner western suburbs of Adelaide

    Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone in Adelaide could recommend a good VW mechanic in the Mile End area for my Mk1. There's plenty of mechanics in this area but I wouldn't know where to start.

I've been going to GHR recently, and I've no problem with them at all. They're just a bit far to go, though closer to where I can get a lift. But it is worth the travel to a good workshop.

AVW doesn't exist anymore (at least not on Richmond Rd) and I'm less convinced about Cartek since they moved away from VWs.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers

What do you need doing that you couldn't do yourself?

German Auto in Melrose Park are good but I don't know if you could talk them into working on a MK1 these days?

      Thanks Gavin.

I'm not real competent with a spanner and I don't have much time or space to anything other than very minor stuff. Servicing and general maintainence is what I'm after, but I tend not to trust mechanics who don't know VWs or don't really care.

I used to got to German Auto and was a loyal customer, but now they don't do early stuff anymore and wouldn't touch a MK1.

I reckon you're a bit stuck for places you can walk home from. I'd find it hard to pay someone to work on a MK1. Some servicing bills could represent a big percentage of it's value.

Yeah, my last service was $450 (incl new brakes and a tie rod end).

I don't mind paying to keep the old golf reliable and (mostly) mechanically sound. That's worth a lot to me. And I know you never make money on cars.

So I guess GHR is still on the agenda (they're reasonably priced, too).

Cartek on South Rd, Work on all VW's from Split kombis to the latest generation Golfs, ect.
Shane knows his stuff, used to race a Porsche powered beetle in the past.
He does most of the work on the Formula Vee cars in SA
Has worked on my Mk4 Golf and wouldnt trust anyone else ( no I have no connection with them) just good honest service.
They carry loads of stock and can get all parts.

Have tried others in the area in the past, some are a bit old fashioned like backyarders and others are trying to be a bit up-market.

Kieren at AVW on Ashwin Pde next to the Brickworks.
Tell him I recommended him to you.
He's always done well by me.
