Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Any one know where I can find a 8mm XZN bit for my tranny ? They are also referred to as Triple Square or 12pt torx. I need the 8mm and cant find them anywhere here.

Do a search for Hazet or Stahlwillie tools.
    Should be easy to get.

most repco's should have as well
our local one does, torque bits
are used most euro cars so they
should keep them for local mechanics

La Bear branded power bit set.
$34.50 from Queensland Tradetools. Includes M5,6,8,10,12 long and short triple square. Plus inhex plus torx. Can't go wrong for the money for occasional use.

Description on the web site says "spline" but I got a set today and they are definitely triple square (XZN to Europeans). The 10mm bit holders I have do not look like black impact strength as per the web site, but the quality looks perfectly acceptable. Max size triple square is M12.

If any happen to break, I can always replace with extra high quality SnapOn (around $30+ each socket, $300 for set of 6 long/short), BluePoint ($90 for a set of 9 short length triple square to M16 ), Beta, Bahco, etc. The Kincrome set is currently around $90 but I've never really fallen in love with Kincrome tools.

Anyone really keen could import some Schwaben tools (40 euro for a set of six long reach triple square designed for VAG cars) - never heard of them before net surfing lat night but couldn't be bad if German. Other Schwaben tools look interesting.

(Still love my Beta tools, got some more direct from UK earlier in the year that we don't get here. Beautiful, strong, fine ratchets. Barry Sheene had a whole garage full of Beta tools.)

Total Tools have them on the shelf. $25 or so, Sidchrome brand.
