Car decision....help

Time to change car. My wife still driving 1999 model tdi passat with 340.000 km on odo...car still drive nice, no issues. But, little bit oldish...
She made short list: (onky second hand)

- 2014 passat wagon tdi with full vw service - 62.000 km on odo. Major service done.- 26.000$
-2013 Peugeot allure 508 hdi with 37.000km -23.500$
-2014 mazda 6 gj diesel with 45.000 km - 25.000$

Hard choices. i still driving my Passat...

What would you choose?

Hi,

There are still a lot of variables that we don't know like spec levels, have the Peugeot and the Mazda had all their scheduled servicing and by whom??

I would personally lean towards the Passat and Mazda. I have heard one too many horror stories from Peugeot owning friends.

You obviously like and have had an excellent run with your 1999 Passat, so that should count for something??

Passat are great car, no doubt. Bit i would say older models are better even then new one...one of my friend complain non stop about his 2013 model... every now and then he is driving car to service... engine issues, electronic issues, tailgate issue. Everthing...ok, still under warranty and fixes are free...but still...
Mazdas is nice car but i am not sure about service interval... someone says 10.000 km or 6 months which is ridiculous for diesel...
I do not know...i would take 2009 cr but can not find any with low mileage. I using mine - 30.000 km/ per year and works fantastic. Of course, i wish i had all new electronic gadgets in car.
For Peugeot can not comment - never use them. Apparently, they are nice but i do not think they have support like vw in Australia.

Spec for Peugeot - 120kw 2.0 l engine, service done by Peugeot.
Mazda 129 kw 2.2 l engine.. services done by mazda service.
Passat 130 kw, 2.0l engine - servicw by vw service (not specialist )...all with papera. Teat drive done - passat drive veryyy nice, soft ride,quiet engine, lot gadgets, little turbo lag (normal).
Mazda - very classy inside, more lag then Passat. Lot,lot more standard features then Passat. Little bit harsh drive...maybe because 18 " tyres...
Peugeot - nice,engine quit, everything's perfect ...too perfect for me...i found Little bit small for me. Entertainment centre console - not happy with it.
That my opinion but my wife will decide .

Skoda RS diesel - 2012 hatch in white with 50,000km for $16k in NSW (dealer)
Get something like that and take your wife on an overseas trip with the change....

The Mazdas look nice but have very tight engineering tolerances (even more so than modern VWs), so if you go with the Mazda, make sure that you stick to the service schedule religiously.

Two people I know have blown up their Mazda 6s by not sticking to the service schedule. One did not maintain his vehicle well at all and blew the engine while coming back from the coast, stranded him and his kids 2 hours out of town, so that could be put down to owner stupidity. The other missed the scheduled service by 2,000 km (he had been overseas with work while the wife drove the vehicle and then he booked it in for a service on his return), gearbox failed. Mazda then tried to argue that because he missed the service it voided the warranty. Understandable if he had not been having it serviced by the dealer regularly but he had been up to that point.

What service interval for diesel? I do service on time...

Another vote for the skoda octavia 11-13 model VRS. Big boot, plenty of space, plenty of power and no oily hands (diesel). $400 a year on servicing (dealership) $300 or less outside .. 12 mths / 15,000 km interval.

As you drive a DSG, you will need to factor in DSG servicing costs $3-400 every 60,000 / 5 years I think.

I do on field work. Driving car from 8.30 to 5 pm. Diesel is best option for me. I am not petrol head anymore

Not if you're doing predominantly stop start metro work. DPFs don't like that.

Agree with it. I do driving 25-40 km beetwen every customer. Could be 5-6 customer per day. So far, dpf does regen every 800- 900 km.

We have 2 Tiguans TDI, both used for short trips in the city, absolutely no problems. As long as you don't drive less than 2km to bus stop only, for 6 months day after day. Your DPF will be just fine.

The 2012 Tiguan done only 20,000km and the 2010 one just 54,000km (max. length of trip 16km to work and 16km back home, other than that 3-8km to shops probably 3x per week). Fuel consumption 7.4L/100km and 6.5L/100km consumption on the 2012 Tig with the stop start turned off. No problems with the DPF here.

So, there are big savings on fuel cost, longer range between the fill ups.
