Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Registering a import car previously registered in Qld

    Hi all,
Today I looked at pre-1989 VDub(85/86) that didn't have a import plate.Apparently it was previously registered in Qld,but curious if I buy it will I have any trouble registering in my name,I looked at TMR but I couldn't find any answer.
    Any help appreciated

If you can show the car has previously been registered in Qld and hasn't been modified since there shouldn't be a problem. I once bought a 1988 Golf GTI 16v that had been imported from South Africa. It had been registered in NSW and had current Victorian rego when I bought it. When I tried to register it in Qld I initially encountered some resistance but when I showed that it had been registered in another State they were OK with it.

A collegue recently had some minor issues with an imported 1994 MX-5. It had orginally been imported and registered in WA. It appears that Westralia's car registration system is different to every other state so that when he went to change the registration to NSW it caused some minor problems which took a morning of polite discussions with the NSW RMS Shopfront to solve - basically he got a NSW RWC for it but could not get a green slip because the VIN did not appear on the register (I understand that WA runs a vehicle register that is not accessable by any other of the state road and transport authorities to check) but he could note get the VIN on the NSW RMS vehicle register until the vehicle had both a pink slip and a green slip, but the CTP insurer would not issue a green slip because the VIN did not appear on the register, and repeat . . .

Thanks, I can prove previous registration,by modification, hopefully won't mean problems if I put a Mk3 engine in it.The seller is attached to the motor and gearbox,so possibly trying to do a deal without motor. Then put in a 2.0 + 5 speed out of MK3 and hopefully re register.
