Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • To Sell Or Keep the MK6 R

    My 4 year lease on my 2011 R has come to an end and I am undecided on what to do next..

    The R has a GIAC Stage 1, DBA front rotors with 82,000km on the clock and has ever option except the recaro seats, so had a reasonably easy life so far..so I am thinking of rolling over the lease for another few years and doing more mods to the car or selling it and getting something different. The R is the best car I have ever owned I recon. Previous cars were

    * TE Cortina with 302
    * 1994 Lexus LS400 with air suspension and 19inch chromies.....
    * Toyota Hilux Surf with lift kit and 33inch muddies
    * R33 GTS-T with 330rwkw which I tracked in the early 2000's
    * VE SS - Walkinshaw upgrades
    * G6E Turbo with 290rwkw

    I current options of cars are:
    * MK7 R - Good performance with basic mods, but is it different enough to the MK6, do I want it to be different since I like the Mk6 so much????
    * CLA45 AMG - Second hand still expensive, easily tuneable..
    * A45 AMG - Cheaper than CLA but don't think I want another hatchback
    * 2015 S3 - Over priced MK7 R?
    * 2015 LS3 VE SSV Redline - Cheap way to get into an LS3, easy power upgrades
    * 2014 Clubsport R8 340KW - more affordable once the 2015 LS3 SS comes out
    * 2015 STI - 10 year old engine, slow....
    * Lexus IS350 F-Sport - Interior of the LFA, none tuneable, lazy Aurion engine?
    * Infinity Q50s Hydrid - Something different, performance and fuel economy
    * E93 M3 or C63 AMG or S4 of the same vintage - All will be out of warranty and close to 100,000 km.. issues???

    What are peoples thoughts on my dilemma, any comments on the cars I have in mind from previous experience, any other car suggestions???

    I need to make a decision soon as the bank is going to start chasing me to pay the residual soon....

    Seems like you have answered you own question.
    The most cost effective method is to keep the Mk6 R which is still a fantastic car, and use the money for go fast bits or track time.

    Getting a V8 is going to cost you a fortune in fuel, rego and insurance.

    I have heard the CLA/A45 are very good but quite harsh whereas the R and S3 are more smooth and subtle.

      Hmmm..

      I would say 2016 Ford Focus RS or 2015/16 Ford Mustang GT but they are both not out yet which doesn't help you.

      If you don't care about practicality, comfort and interior and happy to sacrifice these things for performance, handling and exotic car looks then go a Lotus Elise or Exige..

      * But I am bias as I have a GT on order and own an Elise S

        A mate of mine bought a MK7 R. He'd also driven some modded MK6 R beforehand and felt the stock MK7 was a better car than the modded MK6 so it would make me question the point of tipping more money into a MK6 (and I enjoy modding cars).

        Having sunk truckloads of money into cars in the past (that I tended to turn over fairly quickly) and being burnt with a few cars that turned out to be lemons, these days I'm more inclined to stick with cars that are a known entity.

        So, I'd stick with the MK6 a bit longer if it's doing everything you want.

                  Hilux was a previous car which I got with the intension of doing a lot of 4wd, as I imported it myself, not that interested in off-roading now..

                  Main use is daily driving and some weekend fun with much more wealthy friends than mine with Porsches, one just ordered a Cayman GT4.

                  I also had new BMW 328i and Merc C250 on my mind which I forgot to add to the list.

                      How big is the residual?

                      Pay it down, keep the R as your daily drive, and get something "different" second hand for a weekend blast?

                      I reckon a R daily with a used V8 / track type car like the Lotus above for weekend blasting would be pretty much nirvana.... and you have two very different feeling cars to enjoy.

                        Residual is about what I can sell the car for, mid 30's, how I planned the lease was to always sell and get a new car, but now in 2 minds.

                        I had my weekend track car 'skyline' and the daily which was the LS400. Have too many other bills at the moment to go back to having a weekend car...

                          I also think you've just answered your own question, you were always going to sell it but now you've got two minds about getting rid of it, so don't you think if you sell it, you're going to regret it..
