Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I am interested in looking into a scantool,
I see everyone here uses VCDS tool/software, I was wondering if the snapon scantools are any good?? I know there is a huge price difference between the two of them. $500 vs $8000 but will I be able to do more with the snapon scantools??

On the newest VAG cars the SnapOn is not as good as the VCDS. I have SnapOn VerusPro, on a bit older vehicles it will do many things better and easier than VCDS, it will do some things easier on the newer cars as well, but most of the time you would reach for the VCDS, unless you also have Autologic, which gives you ability to do the manufacturers software updates. The Autologic is the most expensive of the 3 and to keep it upto date cost 3 times as much as the SnapOn yearly upgrades. Where the VCDS updates are free. The hand held toy scanners from the eBay will not detect all the codes, even the serious faults will go undetected. As most of the times, you get what paid for.

Don't get Snap On to start with, if you do only VAG cars, the VCDS is a very good starting point and is very cheap for what it does. The best value for money. The Ross Tech people are very, very generous any other scan tool company would charge a fortune for that.
