  • Rust on brand new VW oil filter hub (photos)

I purchased a brand new OEM filter for the MK6 GTI last Saturday and when I got home to fit it noticed it had some rust on the hub.
Fitted it on the car anyway and drove it for a week.

Has any one else seen or used an oil filter like this? Concerns me as it's an OEM VW part as well.

PS: I couldnt' stand to think of little rust particles circulating in the engine (even though the filter would have trapped those bits) so I removed it today and replaced it with a Mann filter.

You should go back to the dealer and check the same filters if they also have the rust on them. Though it would be better if you wouldn't fit it.

I've already fitted a new filter as stated above. Had to use this one for a week until the Mann one arrived in the post because I already punctured the old one to get it off and had to use the car.

Might do another oil change soon just in case.

Just fu*ken sh*ts me that OEM stuff like this costs $30 and comes with rust.
The Mann filter cost $12 off Ebay and was spotless.

While I have no doubts that the second filter was rust free, I doubt that it cost you $12 on eBay. Maybe $12 + postage.

But, you didn't have to spent even $12, if you took it to dealer where you bought it from (if) they would replace it at no cost to you and at the same time you would do something for your fellow Vdubers, by letting the VW know that they can have a bad batch of filters.

Unless of course you didn't buy it from the dealer.

In actual fact I purchased the Mann oil filter a week before the oil change.
The weekend came around and it hadn't arrived yet so I went in and bought an OEM one so I can change it before the Mann oil filter arrived.
Seriously, why the f*ck would I lie about the cost of the Mann oil filter?
Correction: I actually paid less than $12.

Anyway. Was just curious if anybody had actually purchased an OEM filter in this condition before but I found another thread: http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...888-90836.html

            Cheers me dears.

So, why wouldn't you go to the dealer with your rusty oil filter you've bought?

It just doesn't make a sense does it? You care about money by buying $2.75 oil filter of the eBay and then you're wasting $30 that you paid at the dealer?

Isn't the rusty oil filter Mann filter too?

No. By the time I started changing the oil it was early afternoon and the dealer had closed at 12:00pm.
So there I am with all the oil drained out and the old filter off when to my surprise, as I unpacked the new OEM one, it was rusty.
So I had to fit the rusty one to get the car going.
The rusty one is now off and i've replaced it with the Mann filter which finally came in the mail.

No, the Mann filter was spotless.
That was my point. The cheap filter was good and yet the OEM fancy pants VW one was rusty.

Anyway, hope the thread serves as a heads up for any one who buys OEM filters make sure you check it before leaving.

Given the circumstances, yeah you've got every right to be cheesed off.

It's half the reason why I try not to work on weekends. If you get a bad part, it's near impossible to sort it out on the day without massively inconveniencing the client, if you don't have another one.

Well, I'd rather fit the old filter back in, than the contaminated one not knowing the condition of the inside the filter. It'd be less of the risk.

Yes, the sign that the filter wasn't stored properly.
