Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Mk7 Golf R wheel disintegrated at speed!

Customer’s BRAND NEW Volkswagen Golf R Wheel Literally Disintegrates at Speed! (Gallery) | Epic Internet

Not sure what to think of this, surely a wheel couldn't just fail driving? Well at least a good quality wheel won't..

Was it the tyre or the alloy that failed?

Supposedly the alloy itself. the tyre looks fine in the photos

Interested to hear what the full story is, considering the car isn't technically "BRAND NEW.

One thing worth noting is that VW doesn't manufacture the alloys. A third party, most likely ATS does. They'd perform their own QC on them to VW's standards in-house.

I'd be putting it down to a case of a dud wheel (i.e. manufacturing fault) than anything else. VGA will sort it out, and hopefully, it'll be the last we hear of it.

looks like having too much fun on the twisties at Mt Nebo or Mt Tamborine where cops are minimal at midnight time... and sometimes big pot holes are not visible at night unless you drive normally.

but hey the wheel damage looks nasties!

Metallurgist report should identify the cause of the failure, that would be the next step.

                Cheers

I agree, that road is one of the worst i have ever driven on for potholes and trenches.
Having said that you wouldn't expect a wheel to fracture like that.

That looks bad, but have we heard the whole story? I had an M3 OEM 19" fail, but it was after a bad pothole.

There's some rumblings at the moment, that a MK7 R had been fitted from the factory with the incorrect tyres. Apparently they were too narrow, and not of the correct load-rating. Whether that applies here, time will tell.

The tyres wont cause the wheel to fail. This wheel has failed at the spokes too which suggests something erong with the metal in the wheel. If it had been from hitting a pothole it would most likely the outer rim would have failed. Unless the pothole was hit with excessive lock on like understeering through it and a huge side load was applied to the spokes!
