I think every new car I've picked up (including over the years Honda, Mazda and Holden) have always had the 1,000km free check; just curious whether it's local expectation that drives it or not.

1.000km services are abit useless. The car is all still glossy and your still in wonder mode. So usually unless it is a major issue, smaller stuff won't be noticed. 5k km services are abit more practical as it serves as abit of a halfway point between the first REAL service and the shine has worn off the car abit so your abit more likely to notice any little issues with it.

I agree, although on my last new car (not VW) I started getting tyre pressure issues across the board.. then again I would have been taking it back regardless. I'm seeing it as more of a marketing exercise.. 'we care'.

I can safely say that's not always valid. Some cars were made up to a year (or even longer) before they were sold, in which case you need to check the production date and find out if the dealer change the engine oil, since the first service is due at 15,000km or 12months whichever comes first.
I've changed the oil in my Amarok at 1200km since it's a 2013 model and it was close to 12months.
