Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Car photographer looking for cars to photograph

    Hi folks,

My name is Alex, and I am posting this as an amateur car photographer. I have been focusing on photographing cars for a year now with a fairly unusual style and technique.

For the most part I have been photographing my own car (a Golf Mk6 118 ). On occasion I have had the opportunity to photograph friend's cars as well (far more interesting than my own ).

I invite you to have a look at what I do here:

I am attaching a couple of recent examples for visibility.

I am posting this because I am looking for more cars to photograph.

Primarily, in the context of this post, I am after Golf Mk6 R and Scirocco R examples, be they stock or modified. That said, I'm open to any car that is interesting. If you love your car, I'm sure there's something interesting about it.

    This is how it works:
    - Each shoot takes between 1 to 3 hours for a single photograph. Following that, I take another 4 to 8 hours to process and produce the final result.
    - My technique requires that the shoot be done in darkness. This is not a studio shoot. Google "light painting" to better understand what a shoot like this is like, and why the need for darkness. Message me, if you're interested, and I can provide you with a YouTube link of a time-lapse of a recent shoot I did.
    - This is not a commercial venture. There is no financial aspect to it. The car owner volunteers his/her time and car for a few hours, and in return I provide full resolution JPG and TIFF files (good for wallpaper, social sharing, or print).
    - Of course, I only shoot cars that I am interested in.

Typically I do these shoots in my own building's car park. It provides some interesting hints of an industrial look. Plus, I am familiar with the environment and can control it. If the car owner has an alternate suggestion, I am happy to discuss it for suitability and feasibility.

I live in Toorak, VIC. This means that either the car needs to be driven here, or the preferred alternate location needs to be within driving distance (i.e. at least inside VIC ).

    So, that's about it.

I love cars (I am particularly fond of the aforementioned Mk6 Golf R and Scirocco R ) and photography, so I do this simply for the love of it. It's a good creative outlet for me. Please look at my work. If you are interested, and you believe we can work together, please feel free to reply, or message me, to discuss.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Alex

This thread never got any traction when I first posted it, so I figure I'll give it another go.

I'm sharing some photographs that I've made since this was posted.

    Volkswagen Scirocco R

    Porsche Boxster Spyder

    Volkswagen Golf Mk6 R

    Audi A3 Sportback

Volkswagen Golf Mk5 GTI - Pirelli Edition

    Mercedes A250

I hope you enjoy these, and that they might spark some interest.

Some fantastic shots there mate - love the locations, and the post-processing looks wild. If I was in Vic, I'd be keen!

But do make sure the cars have their wheels pointed away from the camera, so you don't see the tread facing you. That just looks wrong IMHO, and you never see it in pro shots.

        I appreciate the kind remarks.

Regarding the tread, it's always a calculated decision, and it varies by car and the angle of the shot. Some cars can handle partially obscuring the wheel (turned away), others can't as well, which means they either go straight (a bit boring), or turned into.

I like showing tread, in that case, and pay special attention to them throughout the process, it adds a sense of strength when I look at them.

It's obvious you've put a lot of money and effort into your car.

Having said that, it's the Polo is not a line I'm keen on working with, even with such a great example.

Thank you very much for the offer, however.

              Scott,
              1. Can you please tell me what car you have? A photo, or link to a thread, would be ideal.

              2. I don't charge for these shoots. The owner volunteers his/her time and car, and I provide a full size file for free, for non-commercial use.

The time and effort that goes into each one is significant (average ~10 hours total per image). I'm not charging for this because a fair price for the effort would be unappealing to most owners.

Instead I do it for free, I pick and choose what I shoot, and it's done for the love of it all.

I'm working towards working with brands at some point in the future, and those will likely be commercial arrangements. But that's a different story.

EDIT: I should clarify that, within VW, I'm actively looking for:
              - a blue Mk6 Golf R (surprisingly hard to source, it seems) - especially hoping for one with some nice mods on it,
              - a nicely modified Mk4 R32,
              - a couple of examples or nicely done up Mk6 Golf GTI's, and
              - nicely done Scirocco R's (I have a weakness for this car)

Anything outside that is very discretional.
