Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • A challenge for 4WD spotters.....

Having a bad month with vehicle damage. After the stealer scraped the right rear and lied about causing it....

....some rather incompetent 4WD driver backs into the Polo while unattended leaving all of this as a surprise for my daughter:

Looks like the rear mounted spare has run over the bonnet; number plate has left maroon paint residue on the number plate frame and bumper; possible exhaust pipe has gouged the left side of bumper. Guessing it would be a $1500-2000 panel beater job, so we're still going to be out an excess after insurance +/- losing NCB unless we can nominate the other party.

So looking to try to figure out exactly which 4WD could do this. My daughter said only it was a big unusual/uncommon one she didn't recognise and she knows a lot of cars. So far, I haven't seen a 4WD with rear mounted spare and a low mounted rear number plate (which looks to be towards the left in comparison to the tyre).

Any keen 4WD spotters got any ideas????? (With some clues, we can go looking or see if the police are interested in looking up their rego database.) The only ones I've managed to find so far that could be close are Suzukis and I think I'm looking for a bigger 4WD than that.

Reckon its a towbar mark on R side. Patrols have spare to left of centre as do ABR bars on Cruisers but they have r/h exhausts.

Some Jackaroos are similar to Patrols.

You need one of these with parking mode

BlackVue - Full HD 1080p Dash Cameras with GPS

Ive got 3 like that in two cars

By R side, do you mean right of photo or right of vehicle???

I thought probably no towbar, as they stick out way too far for all the other damage to have happened at the same time.

Spare looks to be to the right (on car) of the low-mounted 4WD number plate.

Those BlackVue's look pretty sweet. I'd like security mode to record a video loop continuously without having to detect anything. Had a rental car marked with large indelible marker overnight in Melbourne a few years back. The only problem with the BlackVue and similar is "will someone want to break in to the car to steal it?".

R side of your car Looks like a bar slid upward on it Wont be a Patrol as wheel on r/h door ( my mistake)

You can have the camera on in park mode and it only records movement or a knock in 1 min blocks sleeps at other times.

I have been using one of mine as a security camera for past 7 weeks I looked at the card yesterday and it had two weeks of images on it in 1 min blocks.
Pretty hard to see in car unless you look for it See pic This one replaced by the 500 which is black

I think the bit on the right is from some bumper protrusion. The maroon paint marks from the offender's plate don't show up well on that photo - barely visible on the enlarged version - but there are short vertical stripes across the top edge of the number plate and adjacent number plate mount spot.

This is getting close....so I'm thinking a custom rear bumper with number plate on it, no bullbar.

I'd guess it would be a smaller 4wd.

no aftermarket tyre carrier for a larger 4wd would put the tyre low enough to do hit a polo bonnet. they always lift the tyres higher than factory as part of improving the departure angle.

              I'm guessing a CRV.

I'm inclined to think you're right. A slightly older one that that has low central number plate and plastic bumper protrusions that could cause the big bumper dent.

Sadly, if it's a CRV, I think we've got buckley's of identifying the culprit.....
