Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

MissVuks, if youre not allowed to have a dalmation, then perhaps consider a German Short Haired Pointer, or Weimeraner, both similar in breeding to dalmations, but highly intelligent too, and "german" dogs to fit in with yr VW heritage

They are definitely not dumb, but can be impulsive. This is easily trained out of them, but like all dogs, you need to train them to get the most out of them. Also, it depends on the breeder and their stock. Some may have been too close or interbred and therefore can be dumb, but this is the same for any breed.

This is our second Dalmatian, as our first died of snake bite, and is smarter than our first and she also doesn't have the breeding credentials of our first so may have less interbeeding?

We didn't do too much training with ours and she is quite well behaved but can go off when she gets something into her head. As I say, you must do training as with all dogs. She is fabulous with our kids and a fantastic family pet and she does not really suffer separation anxiety. Having said that, we also take her on our holidays with us and kicks up quite a bit of fuss when we get the bags out to pack. She goes down stairs and waits next to the car whimpering and eagerly waiting to come with us. It is quite funny to watch!

As Gareth has suggested, there are others similar to the Dalmatian like the German Short haired ointer and Waimeraner, but they are similar in temperament to the Dally. My friend has a German Short Haired Pointer and he swears that they are the same dog both in temperament and in intelligence.

So to sum up. No, they are not necessarily dumb and you can train them quite well. As with all dogs, if you make them part of the family, they are much more likely to be friendly, less stressed and more likely to do what you want. Ours is part of our family and we wouldn't swap her for anything.

Witness the movie 101 Dalmatians. They trained all those dogs very well!

                        • Golfer: is that stream picture pshopped at all - the water looks amazing, especially the little rapids the rocks create?

Can you tell me the settings you took that picture with?

I'm not Golfer, but that photo would have been taken on a slow shutter speed, like about 1sec or more so a tripod would have had to be used. This effect is very good so as to give a feeling of movement of the water rather than a static look.

I had the tripod set up on the bridge above the creek, and was shooting with a slow shutter, actually 2.5sec. I haven't photoshopped the image at all, however as it was a very bright day with a lot of shadows from the rainforest, I had a lot of issues with contrast, so I had to do a little bit of post-processing with Digital Photo Pro to sort out the contrast issues.

MissVuks, shooting in full manual mode, I used:
                                Shutter 2.5sec
                                Aperture f/22
                                ISO 100
                                F/L 24mm

I love the effect of running water taken with a slow shutter, however these photos were not as good as they could have been, as they were taken in the middle of the day, and it is much easier to take good long exposures in the dim light of early morning, or very late afternoon.
