Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Misaligned Panels

Checked out a car today, the front fender and front door panel is off by a 1mm, seller is sure his been in no accident, inspector said sometimes it comes out of the factory that way. What do you guys reckon?

Without piccies it is hard to say, but 1mm is being very picky. I got mine from the factory and the doors were out of alignment and I only just had them adjusted at the 2 year service

Thanks Fox, basically when you run your hand between the two panels it should be smooth, but the door panel seem to be pushed in slightly.. So considering I'm spending quite a bit don't want to go buying a damaged car

As I said could be just a factory fitting option that the service centre can fix. Might be worth suggesting that if they get it adjusted then it is a sale, otherwise get an inspection done they will tell you if there has been a problem

Well I paid someone from Autoinspect to take a look at the car cost me $200+ and he said his 100% sure it hasn't been in an accident, but then again if it has it still on me.

Hang on, if you paid someone $200 to inspect it and they did and said that it is clean, why bother asking a bunch of anonymous car hacks on a forum who havn't seen the car to opine. You have the answer the only person arguing is yourself

It was mentioned on another thread that the rear edge of a panel should be very slightly proud of the panel in front of it to stop wind noise.

                How true I cant say

If you dont trust the guy waste another $200 and get a second opinion LOL

I assume the bloke you paid would have checked paint colour/finish, overspray or tape edges inside panel edges, and tool marks on the bolt heads. If he didn't spot any signs of an old repair from those, I'd say it's not a big issue. If he is wrong and it has been refinished, then sounds like it has been done properly. Might even last longer than factory paint
From memory VW doors tend to be very tricky to adjust perfectly, so if it will bother you I'd be trying to get the dealer to sort it out rather than having a go yourself.

Thanks mate, Think I'm going to go ahead with the purchase, fingers crossed it is a manufacture error and not a result of an accident!
