Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Importing car from uk to aus?

    Hi Guys,

Has anyone ever imported a car into Australia ?

Looking for a project of importing a VW LUPO GTI..... from the UK but not a clue what's involved... Used to love ragging those little things around, might be fun for a change and not seen a LUPO GTI in Australia before or heard of any...

    Ideas?

    Hey mate,

have a search on the forum, HEAPS of info already been convered about import.

Are you an ex-pat? That might make it a whole lot easier, if not, you might find it a bit hard to bring a post 88 car in.

Not sure if this is true or not, but i have heard that you have to own the car for one year in the UK before you can import it over here

Correct. One year usage and ownership.

Pre-1 Jan 1989 you can import them without the years ownership.

One thing to be very aware of is that they salt the roads there in winter. They call it "gritting" but it is salt rich sands (the salt lowers the freezing point of water, thereby getting rid of ice) that are spread on the roads. This means if the car has not been maintained well, you will have to deal with the distinct possibility of rust.

              .
Which virtually means you have to reside there and use it for 12 months, not buy it and be over here for the 12 months and then try to import it.

I looked up trying to bring a Jap import in but dont like rice or sushi that much so gave up on the idea LOL

This is a link to the NSW page, however you will find the requirements are the same.

The bulletin refers to the DIT (Department of Infrastructure and Transport). This is the federal department through which the permits must pass.

oh well... never mind... Yep salt roads = corrosion... Its been a long time since I had to replace exhausts, brake pipes and gas torch every bolt on the car due to massive corrosion on a service! Will have to think of another project instead! Thanks for your help guys..
