Buying a car from another state, with a defect...?

Hi guys and girls,
Wondering if anyone can give me some facts about this.
I'm going to contact vicroads, but a bit hard on the Easter weekend.

I'm looking to buy a car from another state, the car was defected then the rego lapsed before clearing the defect.
Basically I want to get a temp permit, drive it back to VIC, clear the defect and fix any other required unroadworthy items here (if any), then get it registered here in VIC under my name.

So, my research so far tells me a car can not be sold while having an outstanding defect, unless for parts or track work.
Which means Id have to fix the items for road worthy, get the owner to clear the defect, THEN sell it to me before driving it back to VIC to have the normal road worthy done.

but im not sure how it works as I wont be transferring rego etc, Ill be registering it as a unregistered vehicle.

Any help would be good.

My mate is in a very similar situation.

He bought an unregistered 180sx (drift spec) from victoria, it had a couple of defects for the wheels and some engine mods so he drove it back to sydney (illegally) and basically has to put the car back to 100% stock so he can get his slips and rego.

If the car is special go for it, but it's quite a fair bit of hassle.

You should be able to bring it over on a transporter. After all, it is just a good. You will probably have to go through some sort of notification process with both registration authorities so that the defect notice can be transferred.

Then it would be a case of clearing the defect notice.

It is highly unlikely that any vehicle with a not to use defect notice would be allowed to be driven without the notice being cleared, even if it were to be driven interstate and ultimately registered interstate.

I know that you can get a temporary permit to drive an unregistered vehicle across a border, however the vehicle has to be roadworthy and registerable. I was considering this when buying my Caddy. I would have had to register it at the first available registry on entering the state it would be registered in.

The items on the defect should be a easy clear and would be pretty standard regarding getting the roadworthy so fixing them doesnt bother me.

Hmmm I hear you about the temp permit not working because of the roadworthy state if the car due to the defect...
Sooo what happens with a older car when they get a temp permit, say it hasn't been registered for years, no-one knows if its ok or not...?

To drive the vehicle, it will have to be registered or capable of being registered and using trade plates.

If it has been unregistered for years and you need to get it to be inspected, you are generally able to drive it to or from the nearest inspection station by the shortest possible route. Driving it interstate would generally NOT qualify.

Basically, if you want to drive it, it has to be registered. The problem with registering it and then cancelling the registration is that you pay stamp duty and that is not returned.

The other option is to see if a car carrier can do you a favour. Many return empty and you might be able to get one to bring it to you for a small fee. Otherwise, it will have to be a car trailer that you bring it back on, and now you have to make sure that the tow car can tow a trailer with that weight on it.

hmmm seems I can get a permit to drive it, but I need 3 (1 for each state it will be crossing). stuff that, ill prob get it transported.
Couriers are only $200-300 it seems, so by the time I add a tank of fuel and the 3 permits it will work out similar

I got a permit to ride my motorbike interstate last year, & discovered that speaking to 3 different people at Vicroads gave me 3 different ideas on what i could & couldn't do... Just so happened that the 3rd person gave me the answer i wanted to hear, so i went with that one!
