Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Where to find bolt for tow strap??

Hi, I'm wanting to add a tow strap to the front of the wee Polo but can't find a bolt to replace the factory steel screw in hook. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Cheers

Why do you need it They dont break down that often. One should only use an approved towing device.

Have seen results of incorrect towing methods causing a fatality

Oh I see it might be the track car so use the ring and an approved D shackle to attach the strop THe shackle should be the same rating as the strop Not a 1/4in one from Bunnings

The front of the polo is very restrictive space wise, even more so with a massive front mount to fit in there

so you don't get a heap of choice as to where you run your piping. In this case right in front of the factory tow hook receiver hole.

So with all the track work I'll be doing I need a solution and that solution is a strap that can fit around the piping hence needing a bolt with the same thread as the factory tow hook.

A good engineering shop should be able to give you what you want Take the factory ring in with you and they can match the thread

You'll have trouble finding an off the shelf bolt. From memory they're a left handed acme thread.

I'd probably grab one of the generic aftermarket eyes and modify that.

There's plenty on ebay, search for VW Tow Hook.

The hole is 15mm inside diameter and 75mm deep. You could get a bolt that goes all the way through and forget about the lefthand thread.

Just needs to be able to do 85mm or so to get a nut on the back.
