Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Turbo leaking? Audible?

Sorry if this has been covered & please excuse my ignorance on mechanical know-how, but if a turbo was leaking boost, would you be able to hear it?

Just this afternoon, i started to notice a hissing sound coming from up front when i would put my foot down a bit & create a moderate load on the engine. Similar sound sitting on 100 with cruise control on & beginning to climb a bit of a hill. The sound would increase in volume as the hill became steeper... Car seems to be running fine otherwise.

What else could it be? Looks like i'm heading back to the dealers...

    Thanks.

Bit hard to diagnose on the description given, but any turbo car will make whooshing or hissing sounds as normal. Mine makes all kinds of hissing and whooshing and pssssht sounds.

Also could be a leaf or something caught in the air intake.

The boost pressure sensor reads within very narrow parameters. So an overboost, or boost not meeting the predetirmined threshold for engine speed, load, air mass, etc, are likely to log a fault code fairly easily.

Cheers for the replies. Was familiar with some of the sounds emanating from the car over the past almost 3 years of ownership, however this is just a new one as of this afternoon, & doesn't sound right...

I don't have a 'check engine light' illuminated, but a torque pro scan just now has logged 2 errors:

P0068 - Powertrain - Manifold Absolute Pressure/Mass Air Flow Sensor - Throttle Position Correlation

P0101 - Powertrain - Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit Range/Performance Problem

        Off to dealers tomorrow...

Ok, the verdict is a pinched O-ring where the turbo bolts onto the intake manifold or thereabouts... Apparently a relatively simple fix, should be good to go tomorrow! (only took the car in mid day today, & the O-ring has to come up from Sydney to Newcastle, my new home town!)
Funny thing, the orange 'check engine light' came on for a little while & the car started to run rough, then went back to normal smooth running & the orange light switched itself off!
