Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Are we talking about the 7speed dry clutch or the DQ500 wet clutch?

It would appear to be dry.

Lucky people the Chinese are, but VW cannot afford to upset a market where annual vehicle sales (overall) is expected to reach 20 million (!) in just a few years time.

In contrast, overall vehicle sales totalled just over 1.1 million in Australia for 2012. Small fry indeed.

Yes, plenty - there is a huge thread about it somewhere in this forum.

20 million is the overall figure. VW sold about 2.8 million vehicles in China in 2012.

I could be wrong, but I believe your DSG is a DQ500 (that is if your Tiggy actually has a DSG box). This gearbox can handle higher loads of torque etc and they don't seem to have the multitude of issues that the other DSG gearboxes have.

Also take note, just because the same model of car is recalled in another country doesn't mean it is recalled here. This is exactly what VW Australia told me when I contacted them about my Polo problems.

Exactly Tiguan has DQ500 wet 7 speed DSG is a higher rated gearbox and can handle up to 500Nm torque. The units being recalled I believe are the DQ200 dry clutch units in the Golf/Polo etc which have maximum torque capacity of 250Nm. Figures according to Wiki but definitely 2 different gearboxes.

Now that's a more believable number. 380,000 looks a little contrived

Is it all Tiguans? I thought it was only the more recent models that had the 500?

I think the early Tigs came as either manual or traditional auto. The extra weight in the Tig with AWD system means they put the higher rated DSG box in.

This is understandable, each country has separate, and sometimes different, regulations.

Many (not all) of the dsg issues relate to defective product quality.

I work closely with ACCC - only product safety issues are subject to recall in Australia. Unfortunately, ACCC is reactive rather than proactive and (rightly or wrongly) until there's a well documented issue of an injury to consumers (driver, passengers) there will be no recall.

For what it's worth I'm very happy with my dsg...
