Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Rough cost of a website per year?

    Hey,

I've been running a little side business for a while now (none automotive) and want to get a website for it soon.

Basically just a black and white site, no pictures, just the usual: 'about' , 'services' , 'contact' and a blog that I can use without having to contact the webmaster.

I've been talking to local companies, but they try to sell me packages that I don't need.

I have little skills in HTML and wouldn't be able to lay down a nice design myself so I'd need somebody to incorporate my Texts/writing into a nice website.

    Any ideas? Anybody?

As long as you have basic word processing skills you could just use one of the free WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML editors.. they're pretty easy and effective for a basic site.

The problem is that I have no idea about hosting (tried that before) etc and the website should look 'professional'. I don't want to scare customers off with a dodgy design.

        @Bel:

The blog should only be a part of the whole site to notify customers about changes etc.

Re: Rough cost of a website per year?

A company like JustHost, BlueMile, and Go Daddy should be able to do you a hosting package for about 50 to 70 bucks a year. A dot .com should be easy to package, sometimes free if you buy the hosting at the same time.

Another option is using cloud storage. You can upload your site to Google Drive for free. Then just buy the domain name and point it to your Google Drive url.

Theme Forest sells ready made templates and even gives one away free every month that you can easily edit and upload yourself.

          Help you?

Webnode is pretty good (I use it), just pick a package depending on what features you want, and start editing away. Also has stat counters built in to check traffic and you can use your own domain name if you've purchased one elsewhere.

As far as professionalism goes I'd rather visit a website based off a free (modern) template than some basic HTML-coded site that looks 15 years old

I agree with the guys advising to use a pre-made template that you customise to suit your tastes/needs, they look modern

im using crazy domains hosting, I think it was about $95 for 2 years, unlimited traffic, 25GB storage and other stuff.........

Re: Rough cost of a website per year?

This months free file on ThemeForest is perfect for the example the OP has given.
                give it a run

                    Hi mate,

I run a web business as my second job and id be happy to put something together for you.

I can build it in WordPress and show you how to update it etc. The main difference between just downloading a template and having a professional do it is knowing the extra things you need to do, particularly regarding search engine optimisation (SEO) and with WordPress and budget hosting especially you need to know how to secure it or you'll find your site getting hacked within months.

I can also host it, I have servers in the Fujitsu datacentre in Melbourne that I do not overload like someone like CrazyDomains does.

Inbox me your email address and I'll send you some pricing.

I pay the bills for another forum. It's about $60/quarter for web hosting. $45 for 2 years rego of domain name.

Is that the info you are after?
