Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

This then leaves me left having to use the biting point on the clutch which then gives that lovely burning clutch smell.
So release the clutch without using throttle. Unless you're on a hill you'll be fine.

After working on site I can understand why that slow traffic even if not working on the road (footpath etc). But leaving the signs out when no work is actually happening bugs me too

          Some things that annoy me:

People who don't indicate. Even if it's a case that doesn't really affect me or other drivers, it just really pisses me off.

People who tail gate you hard on the highway when you're in the right lane over taking people, but have another car infront of you so theres no way you can go any faster and get out of the way even if you wanted to.

People who can't stay in their lane around corners and nearly push you into curbs/off the road.

Bad drivers in general annoy me.

We recently had a Bus lane added near a local major intersection. Some people use it to turn left in busy traffic and others wait it out until they reach the point where you are legally allowed to enter the lane to turn left. Im in the latter.

Although it pisses me off having to wait when there is a perfectly good empty lane there. A week after the lane was created the police were sitting in a side street booking people for driving in the bus lane to get to the left turn lane.

The moral of the story is dont persecute a driver for following the road laws.

A few things in Adelaide which borrow from above:

Roundabouts - as per prior comments, but especially at the infamous Brittania roundabout which seems to confuse far too many people.. seriously it has its own wiki page, that's telling you something.

Bus lanes - I understand why we have them in places, but the move to destroy an entire lane across the CBD was ridiculous and driven by our anti-car pollies

Southern Expressway - we built a one way freeway, so for almost 10% of the day it is shut so it can change direction.

Fortunately I don't actually have to encounter any of the above areas except for the odd journey here and there.

The single most annoying thing on the road is drivers that dont understand the flow of traffic and are unable to think a couple of steps ahead.

                Other things that annoy are:
Drivers who speed up to specifically block you from merging into their lane or wont let you out into traffic when its extremely busy.
Drivers who are so aggressive that they feel the need to tailgate and get abusive because theyre in more of a hurry than everyone else (these people realise its a fun game to try and keep them boxed in in traffic right?)
Drivers who do 80 in a 100 zone and then speed up to 120 in an 80 zone. Seriously WTF?!

At the end of the day life is pretty stressful. People just need to put on some funky toons and chill out a bit. We all just wanna get where we are going

lmao its funny, it doesn't even save any petrol. Your car uses more petrol starting up than when it's in idle.

Stop/Start systems are designed to meet the fuel consumption targets in various countries. This is measured on a dynamometer where the vehicle has to traverse a cycle in the standard. If you have ever witnessed a test being carried out, you will realise why such favourable consumption figures are achieved.

By the way, on things related to consumption, I saw the first Prius being offered for sale with a sticker on the rear window and parked on the roadside. I happened to meet and talk to the owner and asked why he was selling it. It's the cost of the replacement batteries (something well over $10,000 as he put it), and you can only get them from Toyota!

I don't often see that, but when I lived in Brisbane I used to regularly encounter cars travelling at 75km/h in an 80 zone, who would then continue to drive at 75km/h when the road changed to a 60 zone.

That will depend on how long you leave it to idle, and it won't take long before it becomes more economical to turn it off.

I can't speak for a petrol vehicle, but I've done some testing in my diesel. If I drive sensibly, and have a good run with traffic lights, my consumption for the trip to work is typically around 4.6 - 4.8 l/100km. If I turn the engine off at lights I can easily get below 4.0 l/100km.

But feel free to continue laughing your ass off as you idle.
