Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I have extended warranty so I'm covered either way.
Ryan, where did you purchase your extended warranty if you don't mind me asking? And what version of the Allianz warranty is it?

    Thanks

      Reference 44-3-12-85

As from Model Year 2013 all new VW passenger vehicles will come with 5yr/150km transmission warranty.

VW is also happy to extend this coverage to existing vehicle in the 3 to 5year/150km period of ownership.
      Included are the following.

New Warranty Includes the Following: -

Manual Transmission – Complete gearbox or Internal repairs (EXCLUDING MANUAL CLUTCHES/FLYWHEELS)
Automatic Transmission – Complete transmission or Valve Body.
DSG Transmission – Complete Transmissions or Mechatronics or Multiple Clutches.
I would like to know where this information came from. Can I find it on the VW website?
I have just dealt with VW. My My08 Passat has a DSG which shudders on take off. The local dealer tested, agreed that there is a problem with the Mechatronics unit. However, they will not do anything for me. If anyone can give me suggestions as to how to get VW to fix their issue, I can keen to hear from you.

Is your car under 5 years old since date of delivery, and has it done less than 150,000km? If both are true, and you've always had your car serviced according to the schedule at a VW dealer, you may be able to get a dealer (or another dealer if having problems with one) to recommend that your mechatronic unit be replaced under the goodwill warranty. MY08 might be cutting it fine though.

Thanks for your message. I have been through that process but VW are saying they won't do anything for me. It hasn't been serviced by VW, so I suppose they don't see me as a loyal customer. I am looking for any options that I can use to avoid paying for the repair myself.

If your car is well out of the original factory warranty, possibly beyond the term of the goodwill warranty and won't qualify anyway (due to your having had the vehicle serviced elsewhere), then I don't believe you have any options other than to pay for the repair.

You can purchase second-hand reconditioned mechatronic units that may save you quite a bit.

Hi Adam, Thanks for the message. My Google search hasn't turned up any reconditioned mechatronics units. Can you point me towards anyone that may be able to provide them, please? Cheers.

Try giving VolksAudi (located near Morrabbin) a call - I've seen plenty of engines there so they might also have the transmission stuff required.

I know that Harding Performance offer them in Brisbane:
                    DSG Performance Hardware

Harding Performance are the official distributors of APR (and other) gear in Australia, and have a network of dealers including several in Melbourne I believe. So it might be worthwhile contacting them and finding out if they can sell you a reconditioned unit through one of their dealers (who could also install it) - such as Volkspower.

i spoke with VW dealership today, as in the Melbourne Herald Sun there was a suggestion VW was offering a 10 yr warranty.
Dealer Service Manager said no such thing, no advise from VW.

Hi! Just quickly stopping by to let people know I'm going through the DSG issue on an automatic 2009 Golf 118TSI that has only done 30,000km. I had to get it towed on Friday as it died in the middle of an intersection with my two kids in the back (not happy). Amazingly, there have been no fights about it having the clutch pack replaced under the new five year warranty and I thought people would like to know that (they're not replacing the mechatronics, though I did specifically ask about it). I'm unsure if this will solve the problem entirely and I'm unsure if I'm going to keep the car as I simply don't trust it anymore. Anyway, thought people might like to know that VW seem to be honouring that five year warranty retrospectively (and I wasn't attached to a dealer, bought the car secondhand, had my last service done at a local mechanic etc.).

You have done well. I have a 6 speed DSG in my MY08 Passat, which is shuddering, 80,000Km done. VW are not interested in helping. As I am the second owner, I am not sure what my rights are. It looks like I will have to fork out lots to get it fixed, then, when I go to sell it, my resale price is adversely impacted by the recent [deserved] bad publicity. So, I am taking a double whammy. If VW fixed the car under 'good will', at least I would take only one hit. I have had about 2 false neutrals. Does anyone know if this means I need to replace more than just the mechatronics unit? Are the clutches stuffed now? If I do replace the mechatronics unit, will it resolve the issues permanently, or will they come back, to put it another way, does VW have a fix for their issue?

                          Thanks for your help.

The 6-speed wet-clutch DSG (DQ250) rarely exhibits clutch issues, and the problems you describe could all be put down to a problematic mechatronic. Nothing else should require replacement based on the information you've provided.

As has been described elsewhere, the DQ250 has become considerably more reliable over the years, although VW hasn't made any single specific fix (that has been publicised at least) to address past mechatronic issues. Future failures are always a possibility - albeit remote.

You said you bought the car in April from a dealer... doesn't it still have a 3 month warranty on it?

I bought it privately, from the previous owner, over two years ago.
