  • Buying a car need advice please DSG Jetta or Bora 4 motion?

Hi Guys, I’m a long-time lurkier and previous owner of a seat Ibiza gti 8v and a golf vr6. My VW days ended when I ended up with a company car, which is coming to an end very soon.

I’m looking at replacing the car with either a jetta 2.0 turbo 2006 to 2010 or a bora 4 motion 2004 ish.

I’d like the jetta, because it better on fuel and newer, but have heard horror stories about the DSG gearbox, you know it only lasts 60km and cost $10,000 to replace.
    My question:
Are all the internet stories true and if so does it really happen that much?
Do you have one for sale?

I would be cautious with the Jetta, but would also prefer it to the Bora, because as you say,its newer, safer, and is actually an AWESOME car.

From what I've read in the other posts on this forum it seem the fault is only with 2006 to 2008 model DSG boxes, does that seem right?

As a previous owner of a 2003 Bora V6 4Motion SPORT (and now an owner of a car with DSG), I would say go with a later model Jetta.

As good a car as the Bora was, its biggest let down IMO was the suspension. The factory suspension on the SPORT is arse-jarringly stiff and non-adjustable. There was also a lot of of body roll through corners.

I was looking at Turbo Jetta's before I bought my current car and can't say I ever heard about any issues with the DSG box (not saying it doesn't make it true though).

        Just my 2c.

I am pretty sure the Sport had exactly the same suspension as any other Bora 4 motion. The Sport kit was purely cosmetic and could be ordered on any Bora, even the 4 cylinder (though at first it was V6 and V5 only).

Maybe your Bora felt stiff due to larger wheels and lower profile tyres (seems most Sports also came with the optional 17 inch wheels but I don't think they were a part of the Sport package), I know mine feels a bit stiffer with the 17 inch wheels on.

I own a Bora 4motion but if I was buying now I would go for a Jetta, even with the potential for DSG issues, only thing that would hold me back is that I think the MKV Jetta has too much chrome, I would be busting out the matte black plastidip the day I bought one.

I ended up getting a Jetta turbo, i also paid extra for dealer nation wide warranty. Not prefect but I guess it will go some way to helping if the gearbox goes bad.

Brought a late 2007 Jetta with 50km on the clock.
Black in colour in very good condition. I'm very happy and can't wait to drop it an inch and add a cold air induct.

Good stuff. I have a black '06 Jetta Turbo with just under 140,000kms on it. Been in the family since new, zero problems with DSG, which still works brilliantly and is regularly used in 'D', 'S' and the manual selection modes. It has needed an A/C compressor (done under warranty) and an oxygen sensor but otherwise has been a charm. You will love it, and they are such good value too, 90 per cent of the GTI, for a much lower price secondhand.

I’ve had the jetta for two weeks now, and I’m still making up excuses to go for a drive
