Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Cheap spline/three square bits Repco

im not sure if this is the best place to put this but i saw in the Repco mag that they were selling a hex, spline and star bit set for $11.50. after seeing how expensive they are else were i couldn't pass it up and bought a set. i haven't been able to try them out yet so im not sure on the quality.

Cheap and nasty, that's for sure. It's a major problem, if you damage the internal splines of the bolts.

If anything the bits may break first before doing major damage to the bolts/nuts. Pays off to have quality tools!
      Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
      Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Yep, potentially smashing some very expensive sensor in the engine bay or somewhere else.

The ballbearings will fall out of the couplers sooner rather than later.

I've got the Eurotech version of that kit. I've replaced a fair few bits more than once, due to some going missing (theft, or lost), and some sheering the tips off. I've relagated them to occasionally using them on the end of ratchet spanners in hard-to-get spaces. After one fell deep into a BMR cylinder head during an injector replacement (Thankfully, I managed to retrieve it by dislodging it, and knocking it into the sump, and it miraculously came out the sump plug hole), I decided to go all-out and buy the proper sockets and a Stahlwille 270G flexible magnet.
