  • SA Historic Rego - New Rules Effective 1st July - Act FAST if you have a '79-'82 car

Hi all, not sure if this has been discussed (couldn't find any other threads using the search) but the legislation for historic registration is under review and new rules will be effective as of the 1st of July.

As I understand it, the system is basically remaining the same but the major changes are:
    - Vehicle eligibility will be capped at a fixed date
    - Vehicles must be inspected annually by clubs
    - Performance enhancing accessories are not allowed
    - There is new legislation allowing hot rods to be eligible

    ELIGIBILITY DATES:
Instead of the rolling 30 year date, vehicle eligibility will be capped at 1st January 1979. This means that only vehicles manufactured in 1978 or earlier are eligible for historic rego. Last month I managed to get my GLD on historic - its compliance plate is stamped 3/79 so under the new rules it would be ineligible (any 1979-82 cars already on historic rego as of the 1st of July will remain on historic rego provided the owner does not let the rego lapse). This means that if you have a car made between 1979 to 1982 inclusive that you were planning on putting on historic rego, you must ACT FAST and have it approved by your car club and take the paperwork into service SA BEFORE the 1st of July.

    ANNUAL INSPECTIONS:
Car clubs need to inspect cars annually in order to verify that the cars still meet the eligibility criteria. For large clubs and people with more than 1 car on historic this is going to be difficult, I think most clubs will be doing this via statutory declaration instead. However, you will need to have the car inspected by the club at least once every 5 years - this should be a little easier than once every year.

    PERFORMANCE ENHANCING ACCESSORIES:
Are not allowed, even if they are period authentic - so as far as I can see unless they were a factory option and they are original parts your car must be original.

    HOT RODS:
Hot rods are now eligible but the usual rules apply, you have to be a member of a federated car club etc.

See the link below (P23 -25) if you want to have a closer look. I might not have all my facts right so please confirm any details with your club:

Vehicles based on a pre 49' chassis that is modified read Hot Rod can now go on the special interest scheme.
Both VW clubs are disappointed we have members with original looking vehicles but the owners may have just changed the brakes to disc and added seatbelts yet they can not get historic.
