  • HELP with Insurance... about Mod's

Im buying my 1st car hopefully this week. (MKV 06 TDI United Grey black leather and sunroof fantastic condition...81.000kms.

i saw something when i was looking at insure some of the companys asked about mod's. and if i ticked yes then they said cannot cover...

So whats the deal with that?, (i have a feeling they could be talking about structure mods... but need conformation.)

I would be using the car for the rest of my L's and then P's and as long as it last me after that.

    I would be doing
Boost Gauge (maybe something else aswell but dont know what.)
    Intake...(APR CARBONIO or something simular.)
    Stage 1 tune Probs DNA
and later on Lower... GTI or R32 rear maybe front as well or full kit...and Wheels

Wow that's weird, I didn't have any issues when I asked about my mods on my DS3. Infact, even my premiums stayed the same. Although, I enquired about modifications when I already had bought the car. Also, TDI's tune fantastically-enjoy!

I have been with 4 insurance companies that didn't care about my mods (Shannon's, TIO, RACQ, and NRMA), so long as they were road legal and if I wanted them covered, listed on my policy. All I can say is shop around, but being and L and P plater in a modified car, don't expect it to be cheap!!

All those mods you mentioned would need to be listed with your insurer.
I know Shannons, QBE, AAMI covered my car with mods. NRMA, Suncorp & RACQ would not give me cover.

Insurance companies will factor in the mod, the value of the car, your age, your driving history.
They are all different when it comes to these things.

The boost gauge is probably not a mod they care about but chances are you the way you install it will be illegal.
When it comes to insurance you really need to be upfront and honest, if you fail to disclose something and make a claim they may not pay.

Imagine having a claim denied because they find you have after market tune, it could cost you your car and more.

            thank you.
the policy will be in my Grandfathers name but myself as a secondary driver.
and do you know the average price increase with the mods listed

For me it didn't cost any extra, but this is something you are going to have to find out when you speak to each insurance company. Each one is going to be different, and even if you are listed as a secondary driver on the policy, it really isn't going to make too much difference.

Nope, it will not be illegal. I have a friend whose Dad is a police officer and enquired about the tune, muffler/resonator removal for a straight pipe, and a few other things. He said it's all good, as long as the modifications remain legal and the car can not produce more that 210kw in total or 125kw/tonne (at least thats in QLD anyway) then it's fine. Still check to ensure that it meets Victoria's rules/laws as well.

I totally agree with the others about that you MUST mention it to the insurance people because otherwise it is most likely they will not cover you in an accident.

Regarding the boost gauge, I am not sure the mk5 but I know with some cars like DS3 Sport and Freelander 2 that to make the cable nice and tidy you have to cut a small hole in the firewall between the cabin and the engine bay. This may be a concern when it comes to being legal or trying to get insurance. It should probably be ok, but just do some research first (which I'm sure you're doing anyway judging by those photos). Just check with the authorities that it doesn't make it non-roadworthy and check with insurance. How you mount it, like those in the links should be fine.

what ever you decide, make sure you get the insurance company to provide their advice in writing.

the last thing you want is a claim denied later on something "you thought you understood" but they "would never have offered anything like that"

it's probably a combination of your age (under 25?) & the mods? There are plenty of companies that won't insure a car with mods (Budget Direct, etc)

Why not worry about buying the stock car & insuring that first & address the mods when you want to do them - after all it's illegal to try & insure something that isn't fitted to your vehicle.
