Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • in car safety (unwanted intruder)

    Hi All,

I wanted to see what people opinon's were on in car safety - i was driving along Collins street in the CBD at 8.00 on Monday morning and had just dropped off my wife at her office and was proceeding down Collins to my office - i got to the Queen street intersection and stopped for a red light and a guy got off the tram and gave me a weird smile....then walked over to the passenger door and opened it!

He then tried to sit down in the passenger seat, i started shouted F**K OFF!! and undid my belt to reach across and smack the weirdo - he then went "oh sorry thought it was someone else"...gave me a weird druggy smile than tried to sit down again!!

I start going off traffic is beeping me as the lights and changed and he went on his way! Pretty weird start to the week, got me thinking though, what it was a girl driving, what if he had a knife etc

any thoughts on this - and pls don't say anything illegal as i think we're in a bit of a grey zone..i.e carrying a weapon but surely a scewdriver is a plausible item to have in your door pocket etc?

Never had anythng like this happen before and i'm sure it won't happen again but if that can happen 8.00 am middle of the CBD well....scary thing is he has walked off to ...well who's know's what! (i did call the poilce as soon as i got to the office and gaave them a full description) 6"1 ish, late 20's, cacasian, short shaves hair and a russell athletic sweater (prettty normal looking guy though)

Although i must admit i am pretty good looking lol so maybe that was just it

I thought there was some setting you could activate in the MFD that allows auto-locking of the car door?

my doors automatically lock at 15kph.

you could probably tweak yours via VAGCOM

I'd contemplate a can of pepper spray, might be deemed illegal but will cause you a lot less grief than if you stab someone with a screw driver

Girls can always claim that they borrowed the "screw driver, tomahawk, hammer etc" from their dads and its in the car because they are returning it..
Personally a Maglite in the car suits me.....

My wife carries one of those purse size aerosol perfumes, not as effective as mace or pepper spray, but perfectly legal for her to have in her possession and would have a temporary debilitating effect if sprayed in the eyes, I hope.

problem with any weapon is that first you have to reach for it and then a maglite or similar is going to pretty hard to swing effectively in the confines of a car.

Personally, I prefer a well aimed hand chop to the adams apple (something that has been mastered from many years of training!)

ah Steve, the sort of weak person that gets in a car like that would probably have incredibly small family jewels and so make a very difficult target

I think the best option is to get the doors to lock over 15kmh. vchecker did it on my car, mk5 and 6 have them in the MFD

wow, just goes to show what the world is coming to these days...

i've contemplated this quite a bit, actually, as a result of (sorta off tangent) having people try to rile up my dog late at night by banging on the back corrugated iron fence (think fitzroy north cobblestone alleyways).

                          i arrived at a two-stage approach:
                          1. - flash them in the face with a nice, bright led/hid bike flashlight, set on pulse (my bike light's first setting is pulse, so you only have to turn it on and it'll be offensive and disorienting).
                          2. - if they dont see why they shouldnt be a c7nt to you after that, then hit them with a squirt from a small sprayer bottle, containing the strongest grade drain cleaner you can find, direct to their face.

                          that oughtta do the trick.

Failing all of that you could simply take the keys out of the ignition and leave the vehicle.

                            Why mess with a druggie?

Call the police and them sort it out.
