Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Old Golf / Polo - thoughts and what to look out for?

    Hi All

Well im back on the lookout for a VW again after a mess of a christmas and the wife cheating and leaving me (just after i sold the polo!), so am back out on the look out for a cheap old Golf or Polo probably $4k max, anyone know if old Golfs or Polos are trouble and should be avoided?

Any common things to check? And what sort of KMs do these things go up to generally?

    Cheers All

Get a Mk 3 for that coin or an older polo.

Shame you had a rough time, hopefully another VW will cheer you up.

You could get a nice MK2 GTI for $4k. Much cooler than MK3's and has the much coveted GTI badge.

You could almost get a MK4 golf for that kind of money, a friend of mine sold his stock mk4 1.6 manual for 4.5k it had 160k on it.

I ended up getting a 1998 Audi A4 Avant with 177k on it for $3700. Needs some work doing on it but got some time now to tinker and tart it up, and it will do me until i get my feet back on the floor and some money back in the bank then i will be on the lookout for an old GTI turbo me thinks.
