Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Range Rover Evoque - a good sub for the GTI or R?

So iI have read that land rover see the new Evoque as a hot hatch and car magazine in the uk have compared it to the gti and other sports cars. they concluded that the gti was the best but he evoque is the new fashion toy with a badge and that will be enough for most.

i went to my local land rover dealer yesterday and saw the evoque and was very impressed. Right size and looks good. I personally would not want one now but would consider in the future. i love my gti to death and if vw stuff up the next gti, i may he signing up for an evoque in lime green! As a small suv, i would choose it over an Audi Q5 or BMW X3.

i do foresee some gti or r owners getting into the evoque , especially if they want a bigger car....

Saw a few at the New York Motor Show early this year, they seem like a pretty good vehicle. I would consider one next lease. Would be tough to let go of the GTI though...

      is the evoque bigger, though?

i sat in it at the motor show and the plastics were a little hard touch, definitely not on par with those used in the disco, for example.

boot wasnt that big either - yes, it's an suv, but it's a trendy one that land rover had posh spice consulting with them on, and i can foresee that most of the ones sold worldwide will be seeing lots of soccer field parking lots.

definitely better looking than an audi q5 (sheight looking), but i'd have thought that land rover's competing car in that segment would be a freelander - the evoque just looks too small, more skoda yeti sized (well, a smidge bigger).

is it really comparable to a gti? i guess with the torque of the 140kw diesel, and the fact that it's only 1.7 tonnes, it might be decent in the same way that a bmw x5 with 295 wide tyres is decent to drive...

it'll be interesting to see what cars people will move out of, to get into an evoque.

If the engine is good, it could be a great seller. The price is about right...

Im not a fan. Something about it just doesnt look right. I personally would prefer the Q5 if i was parting with ~$80k to be honest

But then again, everybody's application is different

yeah, accept its like $55k... I don't like the looks, but its using a 2lt turbo, weighs about 1.5 tons, so they are similar in a few ways...

ah ok, was looking on carsales and saw the cheapest one available (obviously demo) is 78 grand, but then saw the base price range at the bottom.

some go as high as 116k

yeah it'll be like the bmw x1.... "starting" somewhere in the 40's, but hmmmmmmm....... bmw kings way didnt have a single x1 on the lot for less than $75k. a lot of $$$ to pay for a car with literally less leg room in the rear than my 9n3 polo.

Austral Land Rover said they already pre sold 30 prior to the launch. So they are selling well (i suppose as they are the new in thing - sort of like the Q5 a couple of years back).

I wonder if they will bring out a supercharged V8 model as used in the Range Rover Sport?

Buy a vehicle that had Posh Spice's design input? No thanks.

They obviously used the Rangie name to attract the wannabies who cant afford the real thing, they shouldve stuck with the land rover name. Would seem less of a posers car that way..

I reckon it's pretty groovy for a SUV, but no contest over your local twisty mountain road.

According to the sales guy, Land Rover already have the Freelander which is like the Disco and the Evoque is like the RR Sport.

I like the Freelander too. But my only concerns are the dubious reliability of Range Rovers - have heard it is much better now though (even better than BMW - not that it is saying much though)

I liked what I saw of it on TopGear and Fifth Gear, and is one of the few cars I could see myself in hypothetically, but somehow I don't think I'd actually get one (at least new). If I needed a bigger Golf I wouldn't mind that Stage 2 APR Tiguan that aussietig has

i had to pick up a new coolant reservoir for the disco today, so dropped by melbourne land rover and also had a gander at the evoque.

cool looking car, but then you look inside and the rear legroom... maybe im just a rear legroom nazi, but i'd suggest that there's more to be had in a golf, so in that respect yes, it might be comparable.

im with ryan_r - spec'd similarly, the tiguan would be a superior car to the evoque, and the savings would allow you to do stage 2/exhaust/wheels/good tyres, not to mention having a bigger car for the same weight, faster and more reliable (my dad would have got a disco 4 if it werent for the HORRIBLE reliability issues as posted online).
