  • Car deal etiquette

I have done a deal over the weekend where I pick up in exactly 2 wks a new car and they hand me a cheque for my tradein which I will use to pay out my current car that I'm keeping (follow all that )?

Anyway after offering the trade in car which is going for a song, my parents now decide they might want it. I suspect very heavily that my final price was driven by them lowballing the tradein to make their sale price of the car look lower. However if thats the case and my parents want our car, am I obliged to still sell it to the dealer?

On the flipside I have nothing in writing that they will give me the tradein value that was quoted in two weeks so they could try and screw me yet.

    Thoughts?

No you are not obliged to stick to tradin gthe car in. However you are obliged to still go ahead with the new car purchase though.

well technically the trade in vehicle could be involved in an accident in-between the drop off date etc, so id have to agree with the above.

When I got my Skoda, the dealer treated the trade-in as a separate deal. Also told me that if I could sell it before the delivery date of the Skoda, good luck to me.

I'd assume it depends on the dealer but I'd just tell them that your parents needed to upgrade & you decided to help them out.

          Read your contract.

If you change things, then they would be completely within their rights to scrap the deal and start again.

I am surprised you did not get something in writing. I know that when I got my Caddy, I came away with a fully printed up contract with all the costs clearly set out.

Whatever you do, make sure you let them know well in advance. In all probability they will come up with a new deal, and chances are it will not look as good as the original one. If you then decide to trade it in anyway, they might not want to take it.

It all depends on how desperate they are.

I think I have convinced my parents to leave things as are, but still concerned I don't have any thing on paper saying what the tradein value is. I'll be mighty pissed if they pull something as I will be locked into new finance etc and won't be able to back out.

Give the dealer a call and ask him if it would be OK if your parents were to buy the car instead of trading it in. There are only two answers he can give you: Yes it's OK or No it's not.

I can't be stuffed changing things to be honest, I rang him today and told him that tradein wasn't actually listed anywhere on the signed docs, and he was surprised but didn't seem fussed if we sold it to them or not. Was happy to still pay the price so I'd say I could have sold it to my parents....too late, don't have the time to stuff around now.
