Just to add to this topic receantly i was in sydney cbd and after a hotel
Vallet parking not knowing how to drive a t4 transporter i opted to drive it for them they sent a Korean student with me and we got talking about cars and i told him how i thougt hyndai is climbing in design and sales around the world and he told me that he prefers Kia as the old designer of Audi now works for them and he has high hopes for kia having him on their crew i dont know the guys name but the Korean kid knew it, also sounded legut but he could have been full of it...

They have the same designers working for both companies, as Kis is majority owned by Hyundai. I just bought a Santa Fe and the diesel engine in it is also used in the sister Kia car. It does have more hard plastics than I'm used to, but a lot of 4wd cars seem to anyway, they aren't like the Nissan type though, you have to touch some of them to check as they look like soft touch.

The engine is really good, it pulls, I struggle to find any turbo lag, and so far its at 8L/100 in city traffic and still dropping at 900km since new. Not bad for a 2 tonne car where the only other alternatives were all V6 engines. The keyless entry/push button start is useful, my only comments would be that I miss the going home/leaving lights which is odd it doesn't have them as it does have auto lights (might be turned off), and when you turn it off, you don't get all the interior lights coming on but again that might be a setting that needs to be enabled. No rattles, squeaks etc, and unlike some VWs and even a Mazda 3 Rob Tait had that other day, the parts are all aligned properly and no weak clips holding them on. He had a 3 were the glass was all wonky in all the doors with the 3 and said they always are like that.

I had an auto Getz a few weeks back and hated though, I haven't been a car that can't make the speed limit up a hill for so many years I didn't think they still existed anymore. I've driven the manual ones and not noticed it, but boy the auto is a dog.

Like a lot of you, I get to drive a number of cars for various reasons, hire on holidays, relatives, friends etc. We have a Mk VI GTI & Mk V Golf Sportline in the family, and I think they're damn good cars, for the right reasons. Solid, efficient, comfortable, capable, quick, and that 'feeling' it was built by people who know their cars. I was one of six in a hire Kia Carnival just recently,
its a typical Asian car, feels like crap. Some months ago I was a passenger in an i30. Am I missing something?, that thing is a boring piece of bad plastic. We hired a Toyota Rav (new) in Queensland recently. Another piece of boring bad plastic. It must be me, any Asian-built car under $60k just looks and drives like a cheap laughable attempt at building anything with any character or finesse. I feel better now.

i think the joke's on me, for taking this ^^^ seriously for the first few minutes.

nothing against the mk6 whatsoever. i think they're a good bit of kit, but you make out like vw to toyota is like swiss stamped Pamp bullion to a rusty piece of metal on the side of the road, when it's not the case, unless you're hilariously biased.

Just to give one example, as I have owned it, the Toyota Corolla Sportivo. It had character, finesse and some reasonable handling (especially on dirt thanks to Neal Bates tuning the car for Toyota). To give a second example, and another car I've owned funnily enough, the Nissan Pulsar SSS - it was a bit like a puppy, usually the rear would follow you around but every so often it felt the need to wag its tail and go its own way.

.....as for laughing boy, where did I say "character comes from the quality of plastics" It comes from those things I stated. VW's ARE much better engineered, as for long term reliability, the jury is out. Thats why I own an 05 Corolla as a work hack, lower running costs, reliability, easy to sell. But BORING. And I am biased, so what, this is a VW forum and I own VW's, for what I believe are good reasons.

...have you driven a Mini Cooper S, now they're a hoot, most fun I've had driving a car I reckon. 1.6L Peugeot motor in BMW built car. You might have a different view of a Sportivo after a punt in one of those.

It's not boring to drive though - the godawful steering makes you concentrate so much that you are too busy to be bored.

It wouldn't take too much to make it a decent drive, though. If the steering had decent feel, the road roar was better suppressed and the high speed compression damping was reduced, it would be a pretty capable and possibly a fun drive in manual form despite the cheap interior. The chassis feels reasonably responsive and is well controlled in turns and over bumps at speed.

I think the fumes from all the brand new cheap interior plastics are borderline poisonous. I'm getting headaches and feeling drowsy every time I drive it for more than an hour which is quite dangerous when touring on a holiday.

secondly, i dont need to find an article pertaining to "toyota above VW" - you generously did my work for me: "lower running costs, reliability, easy to sell". it's quite perplexing for me, to see someone preach one thing so strongly, yet admit to practicing precisely the opposite, but i digress...

and as for the gti having character - i've already stated that i think they're an awesome bit of kit... and because i dont want to offend anyone (i've already indicated my admiration for the mk6 gti and R), im not going to ask if you're trying to use the words "bone stock mk6 gti dsg" and "soul stirring character" in the same sentence...

im glad you like your VW's - i do too - i have since i was 14, and i always will have time for a VW in my life. but the way you carry on as though everything else is inferior, acting as if you're the world's strongest millionaire simply because you've got a modest, mid-range hatch, is keyboard warriorish...

regardless, and as VW elitist as you seem to be, you cant really be that passionately into the whole VW thing... i've never once seen you at any meets, any shows, nor any drive days/ cruises, despite the fact that melbourne has arguably the biggest dub scene in australasia..... that's okay. Rocket36 was a bit of a keyboard warrior also, and he never came along to any GTG's either...

in spite of your slightly confrontational, dismissive literary style in this thread, i'd still gladly say hi and shake your hand if you actually ever came to anything that has to do with the very active VW scene here in melbourne. until then, though, and with all due respect, i think im done here

I think Tessie is just supporting his/her choices. And lets face it, VW has just totally cleaned up against all the competion in nearly every category in car of year awards. So they absolutley, categorically and evidently, are the single BEST car manufacturer today. If you choose to buy anything else....well, why would you? It's VW or second best.

TBH, I'm almost embarrassed now at admiting to owning one (I knew I should have bought the IS250 or the Alfa - they didn't win anything )

Its no wonder that there has been some type of war/conflict somewhere on Earth since day dot.

Surely one can have a non-confrontationalist opinion without incurring the wrath of others. I have been berated on this forum for posting an opinion that another member (who should have known better) did not agree with. His tirade of accusations were in clear breach of the rules of this forum, yet he was permitted to get away with it. Maybe due to his standing???


I might point out that he is not a financial supporter of this forum.

Just because one does not attend all/any of the gtgs or meetings does not prohibit him/her from being passionate about the car he/she drives, be it a VW, Toyota or even a Kia/Hyundai.
